I quit my job at the company.

It was a company that made retro-style games, which was quite unusual in this day and age. But you couldn’t go against the tide forever.

After all, the world was currently obsessed with the countless full-dive VR games that were the result of gathering all the VR technology into one.

It was the great age of VR!

There were so many companies that made games, and it would not be an exaggeration to say that they all made VR games.

Of course, this always resulted in people asking the question, ‘wouldn’t so many VR games result in splitting the user base?’

And well, the answer is, yes.

However, users were like tuna. They tended to migrate.

Whatever game was the current trend would be the one they latched onto. And when they became bored or dissatisfied, they would move on to the next thing.

Like this, they never stopped moving. They talked and shared with many people at all times.

Yes, these days, it wasn’t so much about the game, but the interactions you had through them…

In such an age, no one was interested in retro games that didn’t even have proper online vs modes.

Well, perhaps there was a small niche. That’s why our company even existed. But things were harsh.

There were too many people now who were satisfied with watching ‘let’s plays.’

Of course, one could just blame us for not being able to evolve with the times.

In any case, that brought about my early retirement.

I thought that it would look cooler than being straight up fired.

But there was also the feeling that, maybe I had never been that useful there to begin with…

People think that making retro games is easy, but if anything, it’s quite the opposite.

It was kind of like the move from pixel art to 3D.

You needed great skill to go against the tide.

Not someone like me, who just wanted to wallow in the past.

“Yes, from today, I am just another wandering fish.”

I said as I pulled out the latest VRMMORPG from its bag. It was called ‘Next Stage Online.’

It was made by…no, nevermind.

Perhaps it was because I was in the same industry, but thinking about the company too much would get in the way of my enjoyment.

In any case, I had bought the hardware and the game as a set.

I boasted a capsule-type VR machine in my house.

Well, I say ‘boast,’ but it wasn’t even that expensive.

“Huh? Where do you put the game in?”

In spite of owning it, I had been so preoccupied with my job that I barely paid it any attention.

Thankfully, it meant that I had a decent amount of savings. And so even when I was unemployed like I was now, I could sit back and enjoy a game.

If it came down to it, perhaps it wouldn’t be too bad becoming a pro-gamer or streamer.

People used to have a lot of opinions about that, but it was considered a real profession these days.

It would be pretty cool to go from game developer to professional gamer.

“Ah, it goes in here.”

I put in the software.

Alright, now to power it on.

Rrrrrrr…

Did they call it a deep base?

That sound that made you feel a machine was running.

The little kid in me couldn’t help but feel excited.

Well, I had plenty of time.

I wanted to enjoy a game without thinking about anything else.

  1. Physical media is still an thing? Pretty retro if you ask me.
Want to comment on the internet speed if this is indeed an mmo game. Granted the game could just be extremely large, but id imagine it would just be put on a USB device to be installed from.

  2. A bowman as a main character sounds like it would be refreshing as there are less of those than the usual sword or magic-wielding protagonists

  3. Thanks for the chapter.
Not much to go on but I am hoping this Ojisan is actually like in his 50s or 60s. It would be nice to actually have a cool old person being the protag for a change.

  4. Oh this seems like it might be interesting. Though I do wonder if this is a story were they split the narrative between the game and the real world or will it be like one of those stories where the MC ends up getting transported to the game world or a world similar to the game?
