Day 37: You can split it?

The morning sun burns my eyes… It’s time to start working.
Yesterday, we found out where it lived.
While it had been questionable information, the talk of how troll lairs glow at night due to the shining treasure had been true. Thanks to that, we found it easily.
One should not underestimate tavern gossip.

As it was not possible to bring the wagon into the rocky area, we left it nearby and headed to the lair.
This route had no roads and many rocks, but we eventually reached a clearing that was nice and flat. This is where it lived.
There were lots of boulders of various sizes lined up so they made a wall around the clearing.
And the treasure…was inside. It was piled up in a corner… I wonder if it will all fit inside of the wagon?

Now that I think about it, I cannot see this troll that is supposed to have turned into stone.
If that story was false, then we could be attacked right now…
And then the maid pointed to a particular boulder… What about it?

I inspected it and then nearly jumped. What I had thought was a boulder was actually a troll!!
I see… So they hold their heads and curl up like this when turning into stone… I didn’t know that.
Still, at least we don’t have to worry now. Let’s hurry up and carry the treasure out of here!!

…Uh. It just doesn’t end… Why is there so much? And it’s so heavy!!
Why is it so heavy… When it looks quite small…
The maid explained to me about relative density, but I didn’t understand any of it, to be honest.

The day continued like this until the sun started to set… This was bad. At this pace, we wouldn’t be finished until night time.
The trolls would start moving. And then it will be all over for us…
Still, it really is heavy… I wonder how many more trips it will take.

Ahh, the sky has turned crimson… The worst is about to happen, isn’t it?
It was as I was thinking this, that I suddenly noticed that the maid had a giant hammer on her shoulder.
What? Where did you get such a thing?
As I looked on in shock, the maid swung down with the hammer over a boulder!!
The boulder broke cleanly in half… I was speechless, but the maid just made a V-sign with her fingers at me… Oh, just do what you want.
I thought that I saw the remaining boulders shake… But, no, it can’t be! I must be seeing things!! …Just stay there and get cracked.

By the time that I finally finished moving the treasure and scanned the clearing, I saw that cracked boulders were scattered around the place.
So the maid had cracked all of them before the sun had set completely… Those poor trolls.
If you want to hate someone, hate the maid.

After that, we pushed the wagon and returned to the town.
Huh? What happened to the maid’s hammer?
She had it a moment ago… How strange.

It was almost midnight by the time we reached the guild.
We had considered delivering it in the morning, but decided against it, as we couldn’t guard the treasure while camping outside.

I’m so sleepy… I’m going back to the inn. Ah, the maid too. Yes, yes.
By the way, we were told that there was no reward for hunting trolls when they were in their stoned state… That was too bad.
