Chapter 146 – We Were Stopped!

I built a stone wall behind us as we ran in the direction of the boat.

Eventually, the boat came into view.

“Sir Joshua and the others have returned! Lower the gangplank!”

As Monica shouted, numerous thick arrows came flying towards us.

They went over our heads and smashed the skeletons who pursued us.

“Sir Joshua. Excuse me!”
“Aye, Asuha! Woah!”

Asuha then picked me up and carried me to the boat.

Iria and the others jumped on board as well.
The demihumans then used the oars to push us away from the pier.

As for the skeletons, half of them stopped at the port, while the other half continued to charge into the river.

However, they didn’t seem to be able to swim well, and made little progress in the water. There was no chance of them catching up with our boat.

Arrows flew our way as well, but as the deck was coated in purple iron, we just had to hide, and the arrows would not be able to hurt us.

Besides, Asuha and the Tengus were using wind magic to blow the arrows away.

Like this, we advanced until we were out of range. And then Mette wiped the sweat from her brow and said,

“Now the shore is packed with skeletons…”
“They will be on their guard now. Sir Joshua. Perhaps we should retreat to the island for now?”

I nodded at Iria’s words.

“Indeed. And there are the children we helped. We will need a place to rest… Hmm?”

Just then, I heard someone shouting from somewhere.

Melk was the first person to turn in the direction it was coming from.

“Over there. Someone is over there.”
“That’s a…human!”

On the other side of the river, there was a giant hole that seemed to be an entrance to the underground sewers.
And there, I saw a human waving their hands while wearing heavy armor.

“It’s a knight of this kingdom.”

It was wearing a surcoat with the lion crest on it.
Judging by the physique and high-pitched voice, it was probably a woman. But she was wearing a bucket-like helmet on her head, and so I could not see her face.

“Melk… Can you smell anything rotten coming from that human?”

It was possible that she was an Undead.
Melk sniffed at the air and then shook her head.

“Nothing like that. It’s a normal human smell.”
“I see. In that case, let’s try to get closer.”

And so I steered the ship towards the underground sewer entrance.

“You can stop inside! Over here!”

The knight waved her hands and led us into the sewers.

I could see inside now, and there didn’t seem to be any traps.

And so I continued to steer the boat inside. Everyone used the oars skillfully to control the boat.

Once we were fully inside, a door was lowered, closing the entrance to the underground sewer.

And then the knight who had guided us here approached us.

“I don’t know who you are, but thank you. I saw that you were helping the children.”

The knight said with a deep bow.

And so I stuck my head out from the boat and greeted her.

“There is no need to thank us. We are the Fendel Knights Order. A…group of demihuman warriors.”
“Demihumans!? Oh, I-I’m sorry.”
“No, don’t be. While I am human, some of my comrades are monsters. I’m Joshua. The representative.”
“I am Ylis. This country’s… Huh, Joshua?”

The knight paused once and stared hard at me.

“Joshua… Is it you, Joshua!?”
“Uh-uh…”

Did I know this person?
However, she was wearing a helmet, so I could not tell.
Besides, I did not know anyone by the name of Ylis.

“It’s me! Iris! We used to talk together back at the Shwartz Knights Order!”

She then removed her helmet, exposing the face of a young woman. I saw her short brown hair sway, and then I remembered.

“Iris… Is it really you!?”

And so in this unexpected place, I was reunited with an old comrade.
