Paintbrush Summoner – 31

Chapter 31 – I had no right to object

“Show it to me.”

By the time they had said their farewells to the elves, and returned to the safe roads, the night ended, and the sun was starting to rise.

And so they decided to rest. They were currently sitting under the shadow of a tree by the road, and chewing on some dried meat.

Ralph was demanding it with a serious expression…

“Do I really have to?”

“You do. I thought we could build a trusting relationship in time, but there is something about you that is too ridiculous.”

“I’m not sure what to say to that.”

Apparently, Ralph had been holding it back. But the Medjed procession was too much for even him.

If this was Menew’s old world, then it would be like traveling with someone who ignored all laws and carried a sword and guns with them at all times. And that person acted casually and insisted that they did not have any weapons…

Yes, no one would like that.

You would not want to walk with such a person.

“Fine. …However, I have two conditions.”

“What?”

“That you continue to travel with me. And that you do not tell anyone else about my status.”

“Fine.”

Ralph nodded without hesitation.

“You’re not going to think about it?”

“I want to know because I’m going to continue to travel with you. Why should I want to leave?”

Well, that was true.

“If that’s the case…fine.”

And so he decided to show Ralph his whole status.

He had been hiding it, because he felt it would result in feelings of anger, if not jealousy. But after spending a very eventful day with him, his impression of Ralph was that of a very serious-minded and normal person. So Menew was less resistant to the idea now.

Ralph quietly inspected Menew’s status and let out a sigh.

“That’s enough. Also, you should definitely continue to keep it hidden.”

He said with an accusing look. But then shrugged it off as it was nothing.

“You…accepted it pretty quickly.”

Menew noted as he closed his status.

(My MP is quite low. I will have to avoid using magic until we reach the next town.)

Ralph chewed on the dried meat as he carefully chose his words.

“After training enough, and with combat experience, you will be able to measure a person’s strength without looking at their status.”

This was a danger detection ability that came from experience. Measure skills through instincts. Real skill that is not shown in your status.

Though, only a small number of people reached that level.

“And so I had a feeling, that is all. Though, your status was even more ridiculous than I expected…”

He added the last words in a tired voice.

“I see. Now, are you going to show me yours?”

“Aye, I don’t mind.”

Perhaps Ralph was more nice than he looked, Menew thought.

This was someone he had beaten once… And Ralph had been completely in the wrong… And so it was only right for Ralph to not hide anything. However, Menew was not at the point where he could think like that.

He looked at the status. Yes, they were quite high. This was someone who wanted to be a Hero, after all.

(In fact, it’s incredible that he reached this level without any bonus.)

His attack and defense ability was not far behind Menew. He did not use magic, and so it was not very high, but better than most.

“Thank you. It was good for reference.”

Are you going to use support magic again?”

“No. If this area is as I had heard, then I shouldn’t need magic until we reach the next town. I am going to try to use martial arts as much as possible. The MP depletion was worse than I expected.”

Menew had 6,200 MP left. That was a good number for an advanced party’s sorcerer, but it seemed like little to him.

“…If anything, I think it’s ridiculous that you still have that much left.”

“Really?”

“Yes.”

It was a mild complaint. ‘Then I won’t summon that much at once anymore.’ Menew replied. But he wasn’t completely sure what Ralph meant.

(Our communication could use some work…)

Ralph had been the leader of the knights. That being said, it was the Knights Guild of a small island country that only had three cities and a few towns and villages.

Figuring out a person’s personality through words and deeds, and allowing them to grow. That was the role of a leader.

Thankfully, he had started this journey with someone who had what he lacked. But Menew did not know that yet.

Though, he would learn a great deal in the next town.

“That’s right. You are famous, aren’t you, Ralph?”

“Well…I suppose.”

Everyone in the Knights Order would know of him.

“It will be bad if someone recognizes you. So take this.”

Menew gave him a pair of glasses with false lenses.

“What is this?”

“It affects the way that people see the wearer…a device for disguising, I guess.”

“Hmm.”

Menew had drawn it in hopes of preventing Ralph from being recognized. And so if someone else used it, they would just be ordinary glasses.

Ralph accepted the glasses and put them on. They did not affect his vision at all.

“Well, I can trust anything that you made.”

“That…is nice to hear.”

While Ralph did not smile much, he smiled now when he saw how pleased Menew looked.

I suppose after seeing Menew’s status, he now saw him like some kid who he had to keep an eye on.

In spite of his age, there was something about his words and actions that were strange. Perhaps it was due to memory loss.

“Well, let’s go then.”

“Yes.”

And so after drinking some water, Menew and Ralph headed to the next city…Muzeria.

On the way, Stan returned and stopped on Menew’s shoulder.

Their journey had only just begun.
