Ken yo, kaku katariki – 94

02 – To the Imperial Capital

A lot had happened—more than I thought—but the end of summer vacation finally came.
In other words…

It was soon.
The Combat Technique Tournament that will be held in the imperial capital.

“Sorry to keep you waiting.”

The door of the staff room opened, and Yukito stepped in and bowed his head.
There were about ten people inside. And they were all instructors of the Viskenel officer academy.

“Teacher Yukito. Good work.”

“Sorry to keep you waiting…”

“Not at all. Given the season, it’s only expected that you would be busy with teaching.”

Instructor Daniel said with a chuckle. He had taught swords before Yukito’s arrival. Some thought there was bad blood between them. After all, it could be said that Yukito drove him out of that position.

But the truth was that they were on good terms.
He had a dry personality, typical of a soldier, and so he felt some respect towards Yukito’s abilities.

“So everyone is here. Let us begin.”

Said President Mireiyu said to the row of officers.
She had long ears, an elf… Though, she was the only one who Yukito had seen.

“The coming Combat Techniques Tournament, and the school excursion…”

She said as she lifted a stack of papers.

The tournament was to be held during the twin moons festival.
It was one of the greatest events of the empire. If you included the pre-events, the entire thing lasted for close to a month.
So it made sense for them to use the opportunity to have a school excursion at the same time.

“…Here you go.”

In the training grounds. Yukito stood in front of eight students.

“These booklets I gave to you contain your schedules in the city.”

“May I ask a question, teacher?”

A male student with short blonde hair raised his hand. The winner of the sword category in the semi-finals. Sigurd Eugnor.
He was known for being incredibly serious.

“About groups…”

“Aye. It’s written in the booklets. Those who are participating in the tournament will head to the capital first. This is so you can secure the training area, transport equipment, and finish up other procedures.”

“Then…what about the school excursion?”

“Don’t worry about that. There will be time in your schedules to sightsee as well. However, while it is fine to enjoy the festival and relax, make sure that you stay in perfect physical condition.”

The girl who had interpreted with concern now sighed with relief.
While it was obvious that they would be eager to prove themselves in the games, they would also want to enjoy the festival. They were still young, after all.

“So, so the group leader written here…?”

“It was my decision.”

Yukito said as he turned back to Sigurd.
Yes, he would be the leader of these nine students.

“I was put in charge of this group. Now, some of you might not agree, but…”

“No, it makes perfect sense.”

Really? I wondered, but the other students nodded their heads as well.
Maybe it was just me who thought it was strange. My skills with a sword were one thing, but as a teacher, I was less than halfway there. I was being honest, I was quite anxious about it.
Still, if they trusted me, then I would fulfill my role.

“In any case. If I had to choose a group leader out of this group, I thought you were the only choice.”

“Hah…”

“I am going to fight in the finals as well, and there will be many times when I’m not around. So if someone in the group is in trouble, you have to help them. I know you can do it.”

“…Understood!”

He straightened his back with a salute, and I chuckled.
Yes, he was serious alright.

“We leave in one week. So all of you should prepare by then. That is all.”

“Understood!”
