Chapter 244 – Inspection!

Half a month after the battle between humans and the Demon King army had ended.
Peace had finally come to Fendel, and time passed by for us slowly.

As for me, I was currently making furniture for the house that I lived in with Iria and the others.

I had already made a big bed, and a big table for us.

It was nearing summer now, and so I was trying to make a fan, which I had seen at the Demon King castle, which would help ward off the heat.

It was like a small windmill that was about half the size of a human.

When you pulled a lever on the side, the blades began to rotate.

“Ohh. So cool.”

Melk muttered comfortably as she stood in front of the windmill. Her soft white ears and hair blew in the wind.

Asuha also put her hand in front of it and said,

“I didn’t know you could use magic stones for such a thing…”
“Aye. Sophis taught me about it. Though, once the magic energy in the purple iron is depleted, you have to wait until it fills up again.”

I answered, and Melk muttered.

“This might be even cooler if a stone for ice magic was used.”
“Ice magic… That may be true. And since it will only get hotter…”

I said as I wiped away the sweat.

And then Asuha answered as if she had remembered something.

“That is right. Speaking of the heat, the children of the school said that they wanted to go to the sea.”
“Aside from the Kappas and Nowa tribe, none of them have seen the sea before.”

Melk added.

Indeed, aside from those who visited White Sand Island to the south by boat, most of the Kijins and other tribes hardly knew the sea at all.

“Now that you mention it…”
“But it is dangerous. And so I wanted to get everyone’s permission first.”

Shield Shells offered meat and sturdy shells. You could even get pearls from some of them. It would not serve Fendel well to take away their homes entirely. Besides, Shield Shells were the primary food source for the Kappas.

“Perhaps I should create an area that is specifically for swimming… I should go and investigate once.”
“Yes.”

Melk and the others nodded. And then Melk, Asuha, and I decided to go down the river from Fendel and towards the sea.

We then arrived at White Sand Island, and were greeted by Ena, who had just returned from fishing.

“Sir Joshua! Ms. Melk and Asuha!”
“Hello, Ena. We came today in order to consult with the people of this island.”
“Consult? Father is out fishing right now. Should I go and call him?”
“No, we can wait. It is not urgent. I was just thinking about setting up a swimming area on this island.”

I said, and then Melk added,

“The children of Fendel wish to swim in the sea.”
“Ah, so that’s it. Well, no one will be against that! We have already been thinking of different ways to get you people to visit us. If you wish, I could guide you along the beach? There are shallow areas that would be suited for swimming!”

Ena answered happily.

“Thank you. We would be very grateful for them.”

Ena nodded enthusiastically, and so we started to walk down the sandy beach.

As we walked, Melk started to roll around in the sand.

“The sand on this island really is nice.”
“It is so white. Everyone will probably be more impressed by it than the sea.”

Asuha said as she scooped it up in her hands. I nodded in agreement.

“Aye, the children will be happy.”
“That is good. It is a sight that we enjoy a lot as well. Also, here.”

Eventually, we stopped at the south coast, and Ena turned to us.

“Here, you have to go quite far out before it becomes deep, so it will be safe for even smaller children!”

As the water was so clear, you could see that it was indeed very shallow.

“They will be able to swim without drowning. And I could also surround the area with a net, so that they cannot go out… Hmm, what is it, Melk?”

I noticed that Melk’s nose was sniffing.

“There is something that I never smelled before. A good smell… Here.”

Melk pointed to one spot on the beach.

“There? Let me see.”
“Sir Joshua, I will do it.”

And then Asuha used wind magic to dig up the sand.

Eventually, a wooden box was exposed.

Ena raised her voice.

“Oh, there really was something buried there! Amazing, Ms. Melk!”

‘It was easy.’ Melk muttered calmly. Though, her tail was wagging, so she was clearly happy.

“I didn’t notice it at all either. Let’s see…”

And so pulled the wooden box out of the hole.

“…Yes. It smells sweet… This is…”

When I opened the box, it was filled with plants that were black as if burnt.

Upon seeing this, Asuha looked quite disappointed.

“They must have gone bad… How unfortunate, since they smell so nice.”

Indeed, they did not look like something that you could eat.
However, they were not rotten either.

“No… These are flavoring agents used on the east continent. I think it is called vanilla.”
“Vanilla?”
“Apparently, you are supposed to add it to sweet foods. But on this continent, it is so rare that even royal families have trouble acquiring it.”

When I was in the Knights Order, I remember that Royg had received some from a nobleman from the Empire.

And what I smelled that time was vanilla. I had not tasted anything with it, but I helped the Knight Order cook with processing them.

I think he had added it to milk and sugar that had frozen… Royg and the others at the banquet had liked it a lot.

I couldn’t help but smile.

“With this, we’ll be able to make a treat that is perfect for the hot season.”

And then Melk asked,

“Treat?”

It was the kind of sharp look she had when finding her prey. I shuddered for a second.

Asuha and Ena were also looking at me with great interest.

“Aye, it is really delicious. I will ask Ecleshia if she cannot plant some of this. And the rest I will use for that dish. It will seem even more delicious if you eat in the water.”

After that, I made a safe swimming area on the beach, and then we returned to the village.

And the next day, we took the children and headed back to the island.
