Chapter 240 – A Decisive Battle!

The earth shook, and the plate of purple iron rattled in front of us.

When I looked to the sides, I saw that the explosive wind had carved a chunk out of the ground.

Yomotsu said,

“…From a sphere, he’s transforming the spirits into shapes that can move! The explosion itself should not be very long!”

Celes said with an anxious expression.

“B-but, isn’t it dangerous!?”
“Don’t worry…Mette. We will do it!”
“Aye!”

And so Mette and Berdos threw themselves forward and supported the wall.

Upon seeing this, the small golems that were riding in the battle carriages started to help them.

In order to support them even a little, I cast Magic Shield and stacked up new rocks behind the wall. Ecleshia also helped by raising a wall of dirt.

Eventually, the violent winds subsided. The attack of the great spirit had stopped.

When I opened a hole in the wall and looked through, there were numerous spirits again…and behind them, a giant, blue humanoid being with a sword. It was at least ten times larger than an ordinary human. And it was levitating while enveloped in blue flames.

Yomotsu looked at it with a conflicted expression.

“…It won’t be able to make explosions like earlier. However, it can use powerful magic. The magic unleashed from that blade is strong enough to destroy a rock wall in a flash.”
“And what is its weakness?”

Mette asked. Yomotsu closed his eyes but then replied quickly.

“There is a core in its body. In order to defeat it, you have to expose the core and attack it… If only we could erase the blue flames that surround it.”

Yomotsu said seriously.

I doubted that he was lying. After all, the magic energy was focused towards its chest.

However, that sphere of energy…seemed to have a small human shape inside of it. Was that Kyuby?

“Kyuby…”

That being said, we had to protect the village. Already, the surrounding spirits were closing in on us.

“Fire…what can beat fire is…”

Water magic. However, none of the people here were good with water magic.

Celes then answered.

“We Mopes shall go and call Ena or those from the Nowa tribe you can you magic! If you can manage to hold your ground until then, bahh!”

Melk turned to me.

“There is a river nearby. Have Asuha use wind to splash water onto Kyuby.”
“We’ll do that… Everyone, I am going to create several layers of stone walls and Magic Shields between us and Kyuby. Once Kyuby starts firing his magic, Celes and the Mopes can go to the village.”
“Baah! Leave it to us!”
“Iria, Mette, and Monica. I want you to use the stone wall and run around while attacking Kyuby with arrows. Berdos, you make sure the spirits do not get close to them. We are just trying to buy time until Ena and the others arrive.”

I said, and Iria and the others nodded.

“Asuha, go to the east river. I will summon Ronea, so she can help protect you.”

And then I used a Summoning Stone to summon Ronea.

“Ronea. Protect Asuha.”
“Certainly.”
“Ecleshia, Ymir and Yomotsu, protect me while I create the stone walls… Everyone, I’m counting on you.”

They all shouted in reply.

And so the operation began.

First, I moved away from the purple iron wall, and all at once, created numerous stone walls between us and Kyuby.

When Kyuby noticed this, he immediately swung his sword and sent blue fireballs at us.

“Baah! Now!”

Celes and the Mopes then ran towards the north.

Iria and the others started to act as well. They quickly ran to the back of the other walls.

And Asuha flew off to the river with Ronea.

We had scattered in every direction, but Kyuby seemed to have decided to attack Iria, who was the closest, first. It was possible that he had determined that she was the most dangerous.

Once again he started to launch the fireballs, not caring if they hit the spirits.

And while the stone walls were destroyed in one hit, Iria and the others just moved to the next one.

As for me, I made more stone walls for them to hide behind.

While the explosions echoed around us, the horde of spirits came closer.

“I won’t let you!”

Ecleshia used the roots of the plants to thrash at them.

Ymir was joining in with a crossbow.

In the midst of all of this, a heavy thud rang from behind. In order to aid me with the creation of the walls, the golems had dug up boulders for me. And they were piling them up behind us.

And so I used them to create rock materials.

“I had a lot in stock, but this will really help… Thanks to everyone, it seems we are able to stop him.”

While looking behind me, I also looked in the direction of the village, but I could not see the Mopes.

There were hardly any spirits or killer worms in the back now, so they should return with Ena and the others in no time.

“We just have to hold on until then…”

However, Kyuby seemed to realize that this was pointless, and he stopped his fire attacks. And then he began to swing his sword and try to attack Iria and the others.

Iria did not try to run away. Instead, she began to run directly towards him. Her opponent was ten times her size. And so perhaps it would be easier to dodge attacks when you are closer.

If it was no longer going to use fire magic, then I could focus on casting Magic Shield on Iria. She was probably expecting me to do that as well.

And so I immediately cast Magic Shield on her. It should be able to withstand at least one attack. And if it breaks, I can just cast another one.

However, it was an unnecessary concern.

“…Too slow.”

Iria dodged Kyuby’s descending blade, and then used her own to slash at the great spirit’s leg.

“Gah!”

Kyuby quickly swung around his sword, trying to reach Iria, who had moved behind him.

However, Iria was moving too fast, and it could not hit her. Iria would move in every direction, unleashing her blade onto the great spirit’s limbs.

Upon seeing this, Mette readied her bow.

“Monica, we’ll help!”
“Aye!”

Mette and Monica released their arrows and fired at the great spirit. And while the surrounding spirits tried to stop it, Bedos intercepted them with his axe.

That being said, it seemed that the attacks of Iria and the others were not effective at all.

Part of it was because the blue flames made it difficult to see, but it also seemed like the magic energy was not decreasing. If anything, it continued to gather together.

“Yomotsu…”
“Aye. While not to the same degree as before, he might use the explosion again.”

Even if I stopped it with the purple iron planks, that meant that everyone would have to come back.

But just then, something like mist started to blow from the east. Asuha was using wind magic to blow the river water.

Because of that, the magic energy that surrounded the great spirit began to weaken.

Kyuby must have noticed this, as he began to retreat while unleashing fire magic at Iria.

However, Iria began to pursue him.

Kyuby would surely be frantic. And Iria was trying to push him farther.

Eventually, I heard Celes’s voice ring from the back.

“Baah! Sir Joshua, I have brought them!!”
“Sorry to keep you waiting, Sir Joshua!”
“You can leave the rest to us, meow!”

When I turned around, I saw Ena and the Kappas, who were riding on a Mope. And Rona and the black cats.

“Everyone, fire all at once, meow!”

Ena and the Kappas got down from the Mopes and aimed their staves at Kyuby.

When Mette noticed this, she shouted, ‘Princess Iria!’

Iria turned and then nodded her head as if to say that everything was fine.

“Do it!”

Ena nodded and then her staff glowed and launched the water.

Rona and Nowas also unleashed their water magic at once.

Over ten streams of water shot towards Kyuby like snakes.

Upon seeing this, Iria started to run to the side.

Eventually, the streams of water joined into one, and like a dragon, it fell upon Kyuby.

Kyuby then unleashed something like a blizzard up ahead. It seemed like he was trying to freeze the water.

However, perhaps he was not good with that kind of magic, as he was not able to stop the water, and it hit him head on. I could see the water evaporate into the air.

“…Tsk!”

Eventually, the vapors settled, and the fire enveloping its body was completely extinguished.

Mette and Monica immediately unleashed their arrows at the body of the pale great spirit. And Berdos threw his own axe towards it.

After being hit like this directly, the body of the great spirit shattered like glass. And then, Kyuby, who had been controlling it, appeared.

“Go, Iria!!”

All of us shouted her name.

Iria flew high up into the air. And like that, she cut down with her sword into the great spirit…and then she jumped back.

“Damn it…”

The spirit body that surrounded Kyuby began to disperse into the air.
