Ken yo, kaku katariki – 15

15 – After the Day

My answer to the Count was put on hold—though, I had pretty much come to a conclusion—and I was invited to dine with them.
And that’s where I was reintroduced to the daughter, Ms. Iria, and his wife, Mrs. Aria, however…

“Uh, are you sisters?”

I could not be blamed for blurting that out.
That was how youthful Mrs. Aria looked.
She could pass for someone in her twenties! Are people in this world just made differently?

“Oh, you flatter me.”

She said with a chuckle.

While Ms. Aria was cool and beautiful, her mother seemed to be a more calm and gentle sort.
They looked similar enough that you could immediately see that they were related, but their personalities might be the opposite.

Speaking of Ms. Iria…

“I look forward to seeing more of you, teacher.”

And I did not know how to react to that.
These nobles seemed to be very good at making things go their way…

Mrs. Aria was also already bowing and telling me to continue to help her daughter. A rejection really was not an option. Ultimately, before leaving, I told the Count that I was willing to accept his proposal.

However, Mrs. Aria really was insistent when it came to her daughter.
I suppose she was very worried. Her daughter had been in an incredibly dangerous situation.
Thinking of it like that, perhaps the Count’s proposal wasn’t as calculated as I thought, and it was simply two parents that were concerned for their child’s safety.
They were such a nice family, that I could believe such a thing.

On that note, Ms. Iria also had a younger brother.
Though, he was still a baby who could not talk yet. I didn’t know if he was meant to succeed his father or not.

“Kuro!”

“Wou!”

I returned to the guild in the limousine, and then Kuro greeted me at the door. I felt as if we hadn’t met in such a long time.

“Huh? What’s this?”

As I scratched Kuro around the neck, I noticed that there was an unfamiliar collar around it.

“That’s a control mechanism for demon beasts.”

Sylt informed me.
Apparently, by wearing it, their physical abilities were limited, and so they were no stronger than an ordinary dog.

“…Will this…tighten if you do something bad?”

“No. What kind of horrifying device is that?”

That’s a relief.
Kuro seemed to be happy enough, as if he didn’t mind it at all.

“Ah, looks like you’ve already eaten.”

While eating dinner, I had been thinking about how Kuro would be hungry. Thankfully, he had already been fed. It was no wonder that he was in a good mood.

“Yes, as we heard that you’d be eating with the Count. Still, your black wolf is quite the picky eater.”

He had shown no interest in normal dog food, and had just stared enviously at Sylt’s dinner. And after giving some to Kuro to see if he would like it, Kuro ended up eating enough for three people.

Apparently, Kuro was a type of demon beast known as a black wolf. A variant of the white wolf.
They were incredibly rare, and not much was known about them. But as for white wolves, they could eat almost anything, unlike dogs.
Well, I had already known that, as I fed him grilled steaks.

“Mr. Yukito.”

As I was petting Kuro, the voice of the butler—who told me his name was Greg, after I asked if it was Sebastian—rang as he appeared behind me.

“My master wished for me to guide you to your new accommodation.”

“…Will this place be okay with Kuro?”

“Yes, there should be no problem.”

Mr. Greg said with a smile. That Count doesn’t miss a thing. I thought with a slight sense of fear.
And then the place I was taken to was…

“It’s huge. Woah.”

It was like a hotel suite.
I had never even seen a room so vast and luxurious in my past life. It was incredible that the Count could prepare such a room in no time.

“And this.”

I was handed a paper bag that was filled with money. About fifty bills.

“To show his gratitude for helping Lady Iria, and to aid in your preparations. I’m sure you will find it useful.”

“I couldn’t ask for anything more…”

Damn it, I was getting confused. I could see myself falling down a dark path…
It would definitely be within my best interest to save up money as soon as possible and find my own place to live in.

“Now then. I shall come to pick you up tomorrow.”

“Ah, I was thinking about going on foot. So I can learn how to get there.”

“…Very good. Then take this.”

I was given a pocket watch and a map. No mobile phone then?

“I think it is too early for you to be carrying a mobile, Mr. Yukito.”

Indeed. After all, it was not likely to be the exact same thing as the cell phones or smartphones we had on earth.

“If you do get lost, you should ask for directions at one of the shops. Just show them the crest on the back of that watch, and there should be no problem.”

I had thought that the crest carved into the back looked cool. Apparently, it was the Count’s crest.
That was authority for you. No matter what world you were in, money and authority were powerful.

After asking about it, I learned there were also buses and subways. The Count’s house was in the countryside, but there was a bus stop nearby.

“Well then, please take your time. If you could come to the mansion by around noon tomorrow.”

“Thank you.”

Greg, not Sebastian, bowed and left the room. I let out a sigh and collapsed onto the bed.

“I’m exhausted…”

Too much had happened.
When I glanced out the window, I saw countless lights glowing in the dark of the night.
The night view made me feel like I had returned to Tokyo.
Well, it was more similar to a city in England or Germany.

“Wuff.”

“You really are full of energy.”

How was I supposed to live my life from now on?
A lot of things made me anxious.
Even though I had thought that I would go with the flow.

(Everything is just so unexpected. In any case…)

I’m tired.

And so without being able to fully enjoy the night view or the luxurious room, I fell into a deep sleep.
