Regeneration Magic

“I heard that you have learned the miracle of regeneration. As you can see, I am someone who has lost a leg. It’s my hope that I can one day acquire that miracle as well, but I wanted to talk to you, as someone who has accomplished it.”

I thought about Regenerate almost every day. But had never thought that I would have the opportunity to speak to a high-ranking priest about it. Unless I came to Amernisus, that is.

“Hmm. So you are thinking of doing it yourself?”

“No. I am thinking of saving up for treatment.”

The treatment fee was not something that each church could decide on on their own. There were strict rules about that. And so whether you were a small church or a grand cathedral in the capital, the fee was the same.
As for the money, it did not just belong to the priests or the church. A percentage of it went to god.

This was all decided by Lord Memrikia. And so if you went against it, the abilities of the Memrikia statue in the church would be lost.
Apparently, individuals were also sometimes the recipients of divine punishment.

The treatment fee that was offered, depending on the amount, could affect the strength of the local god’s blessing. However, old protections faded with time.

But there was a loophole. For instance, if Father Zenrima used Heal on the frontlines for free, it would not be against the rules.
There were other such loopholes, and they had been studied. And there was one theory about them. It could not be intentional.
For instance, if I took Father Senu to a horned rabbit, and had him cast Regenerate while I was fighting. That would not work. And a divine punishment would be dealt without a doubt.

Also, with stronger monsters. If I took Father Senu with me to help fight them, but had the intention of healing my leg from the start, then it would not be allowed.

There was one other famous one. Though, I wasn’t sure if it should be called a loophole.
It was ‘Social Security.’ In most territories, the residents were able to borrow the necessary treatment fee from the landlord. And you were allowed to charge some interest with that fee.

So the landlord earned interest, and the protection grew stronger. The people were grateful, which made the collection easier as well. As there were a lot of merits, many lords agreed to lend the money.
And they were able to lower this interest as well. This would be a good thing for elves, who lived longer lives.

However, it would not apply to a traveler. Because it would be irrecoverable. Though, even if you were an Adventurer or mercenary, if you were properly recognized as a resident of that land, there were cases where you could borrow. It was why there were many Adventurers stayed in one place.
However, more dangerous occupations had higher interest rates in any world. So it was not something to rely on too much.

In the end, a traveling Adventurer had best save up their own money.

If possible, I had wanted to treat myself. However, according to the holy book, I would need a level of 50 in Light Magic. Not only that, but the higher your level rose, the harder it became. Recently, my skill level hasn’t risen even though I used Heal a lot. If I wanted to learn Regenerate, I would likely have to work at a church and focus on healing for a long time.

That being said, it was still important for me. Who knows when I might have a dangerous encounter again, like that dragon? It wasn’t just Regenerate, but I would not change my goal when it came to acquiring healing magic.

“I see… You are a fellow servant of Lord Memrikia. So I have nothing to hide, and will tell you what I can.”

“Oh! Thank you. Well then, there was one thing I’ve been wondering about. If you lose a limb while you are young, will it regrow as a young limb?”

“Ah, many people wonder about that. Unfortunately, it will match your current age. The record is carved into your soul. Even without a shape, your limbs continue to age with the soul…or so it is said.”

Both Heal and Regenerate were a far cry from modern medical treatments on earth. And I could not experiment myself, so being able to talk to someone who was experienced was very important. I wanted to ask him as many questions as possible.

“Will I have to build muscles all over again with the new limbs?”

“If they were already built up before losing them, then they will regenerate in the same state. However, if you lose the limb before building up your body, then it will return to its previous state.”

The record of the soul, I suppose. Even if I strengthened my body, it did not strengthen the soul of the part that I lost. But at least I had lost the leg while training in the royal capital. So it wouldn’t come back too weak.

“I once heard that a person regenerated their eyes. Aside from arms and legs, what else are you able to regenerate?”

“Organs… Indeed. When it comes to internal damage of the body, you would use Heal or High Heal. But if it was something more serious…such as losing a part of your torso…well, you should not think that you can be saved. Even if there was someone who could do it on the spot, the chanting would take too long.”

Indeed, I had seen the text in the holy book, and was worried that I would never be able to memorize something of that length.

“So, what about sicknesses?”

“Sickness? The miracle of regeneration has no effect on sicknesses.”

“Well, I was thinking… If you had an internal organ that was damaged due to sickness. Could you cut out that organ and then be healed with Regenerate?”

Father Senu thought about it. They were not very advanced when it came to such medical procedures, it seemed.

“I have never done that, but I doubt it would work. Once, someone regenerated their eyes that went blind due to an illness. But they did not regain their sight.”

In this world, they had anesthetic medicine. But they did not have enough knowledge and skills for that kind of surgery.

“Can it be used on monsters?”

It was well known that Heal could be effective on monsters. There were some monsters that had rare parts. If you could use Regenerate, that would mean you could get it over and over again.

“It is effective on both animals and monsters. However, it is not recommended to use it for anything other than medical purposes. Besides, it can be especially dangerous to use it on monsters. At worst, it could give birth to a mutant. In fact, tragedies have resulted from such attempts.”

Clearly, you had to be very careful if you wanted to use it on a monster. Either it should be avoided, or only used on weaker monsters.
Still, the idea of ‘Regeneration’ had brought up so many possibilities in my mind. But it looked like it was not nearly as flexible as I thought.

Father Senu took eighty years to learn Regenerate. And that was considered fast, since elves usually acquired skills very slowly.

“Father Senu became a High Elf for the sake of the elves of Amernisus.”

The priestess said proudly. Indeed, the elves would be quite grateful that a rare user of Regenerate would also live for a long time.

“Is there only one person who can use it in Amernisus?”

“Currently, there is only one. Though, I do have one troubling apprentice, who lacked sufficient power. He is currently training with the Guardians. You need a lot of magic energy to use the miracle of Regeneration.”

The Guardians, huh. Maybe I had already met him. I suppose he was raising his level there.

“And what level do you need in order to use Regeneration?”

“Indeed… Your race and aptitude come into play, but… For elves, I would say level 89.”

Level 80. Not many A-Rank Adventurers were that level. And this was for an elf, who had the aptitude for magic. It would probably be higher for humans.

I wanted to ask other questions about light magic as well, but felt guilty about taking up too much of his time. And so as soon as a patient arrived, I made my leave from the church.

Up until now, Father Zenrima had been the highest level light magic user I had met, so the conversation was very educational for me. Besides, Father Zenrima mostly just talked about muscles. I guess that was the difference between an elf and dwarf priest.

It took a few more days after that for my armor to be completed. The armor itself had been finished earlier, but as I wanted enchantments, it took a little longer.

It was my first time wearing armor made of metal, and it felt quite heavy when I put it on. Well, it was no surprise, as there was lightening magic on it. The iron surface was painted brown, and while it had a dull appearance, it would help with camouflage while in the forest. However, since it was metal, it would also be difficult to stay silent while moving.

“As you requested, the light attribute boost enchantment was added. This is the limit when it comes to iron materials.”

“Can I test it?”

“Of course.”

As my prosthetic leg could no longer work as a magic staff, I would not have to mainly rely on the small shield connected to my gauntlet.

“Me-zroi-tar-mez-rei. Protection.”

I cast the spell on myself, and a layer of light enveloped my body. It seemed stronger than usual, but that was not enough to determine if the effect was different. The only thing left was to actually use it.

“If it works, could I bring over some mithril?”

“Ah, as if I would turn down the chance to craft something from mithril. I will wait, but with low expectations.”

He said, as if brushing the thought aside. However, once I returned to human cities, mithril was something you could acquire, even if it was expensive. Still, I didn’t know if it would work, and was running low on funds. So it was best that he didn’t expect much.

“Oh? It suits you quite well.”

“Reallly? Well, thank you.”

When I returned to the inn while wearing the armor, Mezerir was waiting for me. That being said, I didn’t know how I felt about hearing that such plain, dreary-looking brown armor suited me.

“So, have you finished up with your preparations?”

“Aye. I should be able to leave tomorrow morning.”

Now that my armor was complete, I had done everything I needed to do in Amernisus. While it was a short stay, my impression of the place was that ‘time moved slowly.’
Within the barrier that was the lost forest, it felt like the elves were repeating the same day over and over again.

I now understood why Mezerir had become bored of the place. I did not dislike being able to relax. And I enjoyed basking in that atmosphere.
However, the villagers would be worried. And more than anything, the Guardians were paying for my fee at the inn. I could not stay any longer than what was necessary. I had already told Captain Rajen that I would be leaving when I got my armor.
While it was sad, Amernisus was not like the other places I had visited up until now. In that, I would not have to wait a very long time before I could visit it again. Indeed, it would probably be a place that I would visit many times from now on.

That night, I feasted in the inn’s dining hall. There was a popular drink that mixed the local mead with sour fruit juice. As the hours passed, I mused on how the dimly lit hall was just as quiet and peaceful as the rest of the elven kingdom.
