Chapter 132 – Elf Church

“It’s huge.”

I looked up and my jaw dropped.

The observatory we were standing on was already quite high up, but the divine tree still reached so much higher above our heads.

After receiving the ring from Captain Rajen and leaving the Guardian headquarters, I had to wait a few days for the completion of my prosthetic leg and armor. And so between visits to take measurement and discuss the designs, I had Mezerir show me around. Every sight left a deep impression on me, but…

“I would have been happy to see more of the daily life of elves…”

“You made me show you around, and now you complain. Who do you think you are?”

While being a tourist was nice, I was also interested in how they lived normally. But Mezerir did not want to bother people, and was not enthusiastic about it. I understood, and did not press the matter.

Still, just looking through the different shops, even ones that seemed simple, was interesting as they were filled with things that I had never seen before. Though, Mezerir sighed with exasperation, as she could not understand why I found it all so fascinating. But the days passed, and then my prosthetic leg was finally ready.

“Ah, while it was my first time, it ended up being a very stimulating job. And it turned out very nice, if I don’t say so myself.”

The craftsman said as he proudly showed me the prosthetic leg. The spring part was a glossy black, and for a moment I forgot that it was made of wood.

“Can I try it on?”

“Yes, of course.”

The part with the straps was made of leather and cushioned with the skin of a tramnewt, which was a monster I had never heard of before. Once I put it on, it fit perfectly. I stood and felt the weight of it. It was closer to iron than wood. Maybe even heavier than my 3rd generation leg. I leaned my full weight on it, and saw that it could support me very well. Perhaps a little too well…

“This doesn’t really bend at all?”

“Hehe… Indeed. But try charging it with magic.”

It was shaped like a spring, but didn’t bend. And so I charged it up with magic and then leaned on it again. And then the spring bent a little.

“Yes, that worked. But it still feels a bit stiff?”

“That is a characteristic of the material. It will be hard at first, but the more it soaks in your magic energy, the flexible it will become. It must be this hard at first, or it will become too soft later on.”

It was certainly very interesting material. I would have to be careful with it for some time then.

“And as you requested, I made it very durable. You could hit it with an axe, and it will not break. However, it will be weak against magic weapons, such as your sword, so please keep that in mind.”

I had not even told him that Mine Breaker was a magic weapon, but as someone who made magic tools as a profession, it must have been obvious for him.

“That is good to hear. However, what about when I’m not fighting? Will it stay hard if I don’t charge it?”

“Huh?”

He froze. I stared at him. He looked away.

“Surely…you thought of that before?”

“No-no… Your request was that it be durable in battle. Besides, just keep charging during the day, and it will soak it up faster!”

I had not thought of that. Yes, I was glad that it was so durable that it could withstand an axe blow. It would be like walking while using a magic tool. As for how much magic energy I used, it would not be so much that I could feel it diminishing. With my Parallel Thought skill, it should not be a problem.

“I see. I will try using it like that then and see what happens.”

I took it off once and attached the shoe that I had ordered for walking outside. As it was made of wood, it did not have anything to prevent slipping like the 3rd gen. I would probably have to change it as well. The 4th gen leg was certainly going to take time to get used to.

With that being said, it was nice to be able to walk without a cane again. And so as part of my training, I walked around Amernisus on the following day.

It was then that Mezerir took me to a giant tree stump. It was not as large as the divine tree, but it must have been unbelievably huge in the past.

“This is the church.”

Apparently, the giant stump was a church. There was a carved out entrance near the roots, and it definitely had the look of a church.

“A long, long time ago, it was once as impressive as the divine tree. However, it sacrificed itself in order to protect Amernisus from a great enemy.”

“Oh…”

I looked up at the incredible sight. The stump created a circular clearing in the forest, where you could see the clear blue sky above. The sunlight shone down over the giant stump, resulting in a very mystical atmosphere.

I had not come here as some kind of devout believer of Lord Memrikia… It was because I had heard there was a priest here who could use Regenerate.

It was not a strange thing, now that I thought about it. In this world, the church had a big role when it came to the medical field. And this was a closed off country. And so they must have a very organized medical system. Besides, elves lived longer than humans. Though I had heard that they progressed slower than humans when it came to level and skills, they would still far surpass humans eventually. So it was no wonder that someone had reached a level where they could use Regenerate.

I had heard of a high-ranking priest in the neighboring empire, who could use Regenerate as well. However, I did not have a good feeling about that. It wasn’t that there were any bad rumors. Just intuition and prejudice. If I could get treated in Amernisus, then it seemed preferable.

We went through the entrance and I saw a vast open worship hall within. The ceiling was high, and decorated with carvings. What was notable was how everything was made of wood.

It seemed like the morning service had just ended. I saw a priestess that was cleaning up, and so I approached her.

“I’m sorry to disturb you while you are busy. Is the high priest here?”

She stopped what she was doing and looked at me in surprise.

“A human? How very unusual. Are you here for worship or treatment?”

“Neither. I was merely hoping that I could have a word with him. I can come later if he is not around…”

“He is here. If you could just wait a moment.”

She disappeared into the back of the church, and so I sat in pews and waited quietly. After some time, the priestess returned with another elf who was wearing priest robes. I stood up and bowed with my hands together. The priest seemed surprised by this.

“Oh? I heard that you were an Adventurer. Are you also a man of the church then? Ah, I haven’t introduced myself yet. I am called Senu.”

He bowed back at me. I suppose rumors about me being an Adventurer had already spread.

“Both are correct. Though, I am only an apprentice in the church. My name is Ajifu. Thank you for agreeing to meet with me today.”

“You do not need to act so formal. Still, I am impressed with your Amerata.”

As he was a high-ranking priest, I tried to be as polite as possible. But it seemed that he preferred to keep things casual.

“Thank you. My friend here, Mezerir, is the one who taught me to speak in it.”

Mezerrir was also being very quiet.

“Is that so? In fact, we received word about you, Mr. Ajifu, from the Council. After all, I am a member there. So, what did you wish to talk to me about?”

Oh, he was a councilman? I think Captain Rajen had said something about that. Though, Father Senu did not act very important. Maybe elves were different.

“The Council is made up of only high elves.”

Said Mezerir. So that meant this priest was a high elf as well. But I did not see any physical differences between him and the other elves.
