Chapter 108 – The Identity of the Field Ravager

Kelly didn’t look at us, but continued to squat and inspect the ground.

“Kelly. Are you saying it’s not an ordinary boar, but a demon boar?”
“No, it’s not a demon boar either.”
“Then what do you think it is?”
“I have no proof. But…”

Kelly’s hand stretched out towards the hole.

“See? Look here. This is not boar hair is it?”
“I cannot tell by just looking at it. But perhaps Mr. Theo can?”
“Yes, he can use his appraisal skill to determine the type of hair and the quality.”

I could not use the appraisal skill on the hair of a living creature.
But I could do it if the creature was dead and skinned.
At the same time, I could also do it if the hair had been pulled or cut off.

As I explained this, Kelly tilted her head.

“How does the appraisal skill categorize living and non-living creatures?”
“I don’t know. I suppose it’s determined by god.”
“God?”

Many of the Adventurers did not know the details of the skill as well.
And so I explained it to them.

“It is a different skill that can do that. My appraisal skill cannot be used on living monsters.”

I could not use it on Hippolius, Shiro or the wold cubs.

“Huh, I see.”
“Well, that’s how it is.”

As we talked about such things, I took the hair from Kelly.

“It’s gold. It does not look like it came from a boar.”
“Aye. And while I have an idea, I don’t want you to have any preconceived notions before doing it.”
“Fine. Though, it wouldn’t affect the skill anyway…”

And so I activated the appraisal skill.
The information about the hair then entered my head.

“…What is this?”
“You cannot tell?”
“I don’t know. I can see that it’s a demon beast. But it’s one I don’t recognize.”

With just the hair, all I can learn is the hair’s characteristics.
And from there, I had to determine what kind of creature it was.
And so if I didn’t know the original creature, then I wouldn’t know after appraising the hair.

“I see. Is there anything that it is similar to?”
“…I suppose it is like a goat? Though, not like any goat that I know of.”

That being said, it was possible that goats on the new continent had hair like this.

“Hmm. Very impressive, Theo. That you would realize it.”
“Huh? So it really is a goat?”
“Not a goat. But you’re not completely wrong either. That is what I think.”
“…Do you mean…”
“You see it now?”

Kelly laughed mischievously. She was enjoying this.

“Ms. Kelly. What do you mean?”
“Ah, my apologies. I got a little carried away. This hair is from a Chimera.”
“That is…”

Victor scowled.
The Adventurers all gasped with dread.

“A Chimera?”
“…Are you serious?”
“Well, it would explain why it came here, in spite of Hippolius’s smell being all over the palace.”
“…Indeed.”

I understood why the Adventurers looked so grave.

Chimeras were powerful monsters that had the head of a lion, the body of a goat, and the tail of a snake.
Not only were they tough and strong, but they could use magic as well.
And they could breathe fire.
Some said they were as powerful as dragons.
But their temperament was more vicious and aggressive.

As I thought about this while holding the hair, Hippolius and Shiro approached.
“Kyuo!”
“Wuff!”
“What is it, you two? Did you come to smell the Chimera’s hair?”
‘Smell!’
“Wuff-wuff!”
“Here.”

And so I held it near Hippolius’s nose.
Shiro sniffed at it too.
And then Fio came and joined them.
Hippolius and Shiro had good noses, and should be able to tell something. But Fio was human.
I doubted that she would learn anything.
However, since she was raised with Shiro, she was probably doing it out of habit.

“Did you learn anything?”
‘Hippolius is stronger!’
“I see. That’s amazing, Hippolius.”
“Wuff!”

Shiro thought that it was goat hair.

“I see. I thought it looked like goat hair as well.”

I said, and Shiro wagged her tail happily.

“Fio too! Looks similar!”
“I see. You have a good nose too, Fio.”
“Yes!”

Aside from Hippolius, Fio and Shiro also did not seem to be afraid of the Chimera.
