Paintbrush Summoner – 57

Chapter 57 – In Summary

There was no day and night in the Kanon labyrinth. And so they ate and slept based on their body clock. Thanks to living a proper, civilized life now, Menew had a consistent body clock.

The next day, they packed up their things and Menew cast Search on their eyes before setting off.

They knew the direction they were headed in, and with the help of Sety’s Scouting, it only took them half an hour to reach the floor boss.

It was a Cockatrice. A giant chicken with the tail of a snake was waiting for them.

As they observed it from the shadows, Totto muttered.

“This one is clearly chicken and snake meat.”

“Snake, huh… It is quite light and delicious.”

“I never had it myself. They say the big ones have less flavor, though…”

“You want to eat this one too…”

Menew took out some of the mystery meat that they didn’t use the other day, and threw it towards the Cockatrice.

After seeing the Cocktrice feast on it ravenously, Menew activated the same binding magic that he had used yesterday.

It tried to thrash around and cry wildly, but it could not move.

“Totto. If the chains aren’t in the way, do you want to give it a try?”

“Can I really do it…”

“Don’t worry. I’ll be right behind you.”

If he was going to carve it up anyway, then he might as well gain some experience from it.

“Alright! I will try it then.”

Totto stood in front of the Cockatrice and held up his knife.

He did not want to slow the others down any longer. He concentrated. As soon as he decided how he would turn the Cockatrice into materials, the ground at his feet flashed.

It was over in a second. The flash of the knife erased the boisterous cries. What was now left was a mountain of neatly separated materials.

Sety quickly snatched up the crystal. And then Menew and Ralph moved towards Totto.

“Well done! You did it!”

“Yes!”

Menew said, and then he moved to gather up the materials.

Menew had decided that gathering items would be his job. And in general, he seemed to be doing a lot of chores. He didn’t mind. For the most part, he felt as if he was being allowed to take it easy.

It wasn’t like others looked down on him. They may get mad if he did something foolish, but no one suggested he was slacking off.

(I’ve never had to support others like this before. But it’s not bad.)

And yet he wanted to go to the lowest floor, and was dragging the others down with him. And so perhaps he should do more than just offer support.

As he troubled over this, they continued, floor after floor without much trouble. There was not much change in scenery.

As for floor bosses, after the Cockatrice, they met a Chimera and then Basilisk. And right now, the monster in front of them was a giant Centaur.

“We cannot eat this one…”

“We have plenty of meat now, you know?”

Menew said at the ever hungry Totto.

Beef, chicken, snake (Cockatrice, Chimera, Basilisk), liom, and goat.

Menew’s pouch was practically full now.

“Alright, I will deal with this one.”

“And I will carve it.”

“Call me when you’re done.”

Menew had no one to stop or help him. And so he felt a little lonely as he stepped in front of the Centaur.

“I’m a little out of practice too.”

Menew was now unsure if he should use his staff or his sword.

At this point, Sety already knew that Menew’s level was deceiving. And so perhaps there was no point in hiding anything? But magic was one thing. If she saw what he could do with a sword, there may be no end to the rumor that spread after they left this place. He did not want that.

As the human stood in front, deep in thought, the Centaur glared at him and raised his sword. It then swung down in an attempt to cut his target in half. But Menew jumped up with the strength of his legs alone, landing on the Centaur’s helmet in a crouch.

“Good. There’s no point in thinking about it now. I’ll go with a sword.”

After finally making up his mind, Menew unsheathed his staff sword and plunged it through the helmet and into its skull. The Centaur tried to knock him off, like swatting an annoying bug, but Menew was faster.

After being killed in a single hit, the Centaur fell to the ground.

“It’s done!”

Menew said cheerfully as the other three came out again.

“You can fight like that with a sword too. How creepy.”

He was greatly hurt by the first thing that Sety said. And her expression showed how much she meant it. Well, at least she wasn’t running away in horror.

“I was thinking, since we won’t even eat the Centaur…there is no point in carving, right?”

Totto asked as he looked at the body. Perhaps Totto should have been a food critic instead.

“It is not good to leave the body here. What about burning it?”

The bodies did not turn into crystals unless you dealt enough damage that their shape changed significantly. That being said, it was not like they needed any of its materials.

And so they went with Ralph’s suggestion, igniting it with magic fire.

Monster equipment was too big for humans, and it didn’t have anything rare anyway. Even Sety did not complain about burning them.

She then picked up the crystal that dropped out and they walked down the stairs.

The next floor was quite similar. That meant there were five left. They counted as they avoided traps and made their way to the floor boss.

Upon seeing that it was a wyvern, Totto said, ‘Lizards are delicious, so it must be good too!’ And so after binding it, Sety and Ralph sliced and carved it.

Like that, they eventually made it to the seventh floor, where they decided to set up camp.

The conversation this time was about Cockatrice and Chimera meat. Particularly the party where the different types connected. And while they did not reach an answer, they enjoyed the meat nonetheless.

The taste was stronger than chicken, but the talk was more lively compared to yesterday.
