Paintbrush Summoner – 36

Chapter 36 – Alchemist Totto

As for the wood gathering, Totto knew the trees they were searching for, and so they finished up quite quickly.

That Totto had a wealth of knowledge was something that became obvious as they traveled together. He was the kind of person who would think about theories regarding spatial manipulation magic during his free time.

As Totto was always around, Menew did not bother to conceal his powers. However, he also explained that it was something he kept a secret, as it could lead to trouble. And so they carried everything they had gathered by themselves, and made their way back to the town.

At the guild, they submitted the items, accepted four hunting requests to the Yan Valley, and put out a rescue request for the Adventurers. It was night time when they returned to the inn.

They then paid the innkeeper an extra silver for Totto.

“Totto. What do you want for dinner?”

After leaving the herbs that they would keep at the inn, Menew wanted to go out. However, Totto hesitated.

“Um, I don’t need food. But…I was wondering if you could buy me some tools?”

Menew and Ralph looked at each other in surprise.

You do it. Ralph said with a glance, and so Menew squatted down so that his eyes were level with Totto.

“Is this related to how you said you could be useful?”

“Yes… Even though it’s the only thing I can do… I forgot the tools…”

Totto looked like he was going to cry.

He has asked for their protection, saying that he could be of help. And so he was probably worried that they would kick him out now that he didn’t have the tools.

Menew stretched out his hand, and Totto jerked back.

(…Perhaps he had been beaten.)

Menew patted him gently on the head.

Menew may have been awkward, but it was not like he could not understand the feelings of others. And so he smiled reassuringly.

“You have to eat properly. We can buy your tools tomorrow. Is that fine?”

“…Yes…!”

Totto wiped his tears with the sleeves of his robes and nodded.

(To think the day would come that I would be telling other people to eat properly…)

And so along with Totto and Ralph, they headed out to the commercial district in order to eat.

The next day, the three of them went to the tool store.

Menew and Ralph had no idea what any of the tools were for, but Totto chose the necessary items with precision.

It ended up costing three silvers, but that was not a problem for Menew and his wallet.

They returned to the inn and asked the innkeeper if they could use their room as an atelier. And then Totto began to spread out the tools.

“We’re going to go on a hunting quest. Do you want to come along?”

“I will not be able to help you today, and so I’ll stay at the inn.”

“I see. Alright. Stan, you stay here with Totto then.”

Stan chirped and then flew to Totto’s shoulder. They seemed to really get along.

Menew squatted in front of Totto.

“If anything happens, then ask Stan for help.”

Yesterday, Menew had told Stan to help during such times by becoming larger.

“I understand. Thank you, Stan.”

“Well, we’ll be off then.”

“See you later.”

And so Menew and Ralph departed for the Yan valley.

Totto was wearing white robes. He then rolled up his sleeves, put his tools into position, and began to draw magic circles on sheepskin paper with charcoal.

“Separate…extract…combine…solidify…”

He muttered as he drew. Though it was a simple shape, it accepted Totto’s mana and glowed faintly.

After he had finished drawing ten different magic circles, Totto took out the things that he had gathered yesterday.

Healing herbs, antidote herbs, fragrant wood, magic wood, magic stones, and other kinds of plants. He also had some soil in bags.

He also lined up the medicines he had bought at the tool store. And then the atelier in his room was complete.

Atelier… Totto had cast a barrier around it while he prepared the magic workshop. This was something his mother had told him to do, when she taught him alchemy.

By positioning the tools and magic circles, the room turned into an atelier.

Prevent anyone from looking in, and gathering more essence than usual.

“Alright, let’s make it!”

“Pii!”

And like this, Totto started his ‘usual work.’

“We’re back, Totto. Did you eat lunch?”

By the time that Menew opened the door to Totto’s room, it was already quite dark.

Unlike yesterday, they had gone shopping before leaving town, and so they only completed one request.

While Menew opened the door, he did not go in.

“Ah, welcome back, Mr. Menew and Mr. Ralph. The innkeeper gave me some leftover bread for lunch.”

There were numerous bottles in the room. Nearly two hundred.

And all of them were filled with some kind of magic medicine and neatly sealed.

And in the center, Totto was laughing while surrounded by his tools.

It was certainly a strange sight.

“…How is it that you always pick up the most extraordinary people?”

“Don’t ask me…”

Ralph whispered to Menew so that Totto could not hear.

Menew chuckled and whispered back.

“Please take these!”

Totto said with a cheerful smile.

  1. I’ve caught up! Thank you so much for all the chapters and I am really looking forward to the ones to come.

I can always come back here when I don’t feel well, to re-read things that make me feel a lot better by taking my mind out of my body. Thank you so much for all that. I know I’ve said it before, but I wanted to say it again.
