Chapter 76 – Mofusen’s Decision
With this countermeasure in place, there was nothing left to do. They were going to return to the village, when Menew suddenly remembered something.
“What about the dryads?”
“Don’t worry, master. While their home is returned, it is still dangerous. Once everything is back to normal, I will summon them.”
“Yes, we still haven’t dealt with the gold dragon.”
With this satisfied, they were about to leave. But then Totto raised his voice.
“Um! I forgot something. Can I go and get it?”
“Yes, but… Ah, Mr. Wal’s treasure.”
“Yes. It would be a waste to leave the fragrant wood and amber…”
And so Totto and Mr. Wal went together.
Indeed, there was quite a lot.
“I will help them.”
“Aye.”
Ralph said, and then it was just Menew and Mofusen left.
“Mofusen. Do you like going on adventures?”
“Hmm? Well, I suppose. I would like to test the limits of my abilities.”
Menew had just asked on a whim, but he also realized that he was sad to separate from Mofusen as well.
He was about to invite Mofusen to come with them, but then remembered the grandson and the village.
“I see. I wish I could have seen more of your techniques.”
He muttered instead.
Knowledge to maybe systemise Enchants, and advanced techniques that could be used for barriers and combat. Imagination. Everything about him was interesting.
“Hehehe. Then you should stay with us for a while.”
And then he started coughing.
“Do you…want to wash your teeth?”
After laughing, he seemed to choke, and Mofusen’s teeth went flying into the air.
Menew created a sphere of water, and then Mofusen used it to wash his teeth before putting them back into his mouth.
“Ah, Menew. Do you know how dangerous it is, to be able to use summoning magic so easily?”
“…I’m trying to be careful about it… Is it still not enough?”
Mofusen narrowed his eyes.
“Had you been here without the tree dragon, I would have been very suspicious of you. You are a summoner, but can use magic. And you are young. I might think you a foreign spy, or someone from the wind gang.”
Apparently, the wind gang were a large enough and infamous organization that people knew of them in remote frontiers.
Information came at a price. Schools cost money. If you became a summoner after learning magic, it would cost a fortune.
And yet such a person was wandering around, traveling.
It definitely looked strange.
“I will be careful. I do not want Totto or Ralph to get in trouble.”
“I suppose you made those glasses that Ralph is wearing?”
So he noticed that as well. Menew’s eyes lit up.
They were awareness obstruction glasses. That made Ralph look a little vague. But not to the point that you would notice.
As he had once risen to the top of the Knights Guild, he wore them, just in case. However, a master like Mofusen could see right through them.
“You are too good… Um, Mofusen.”
While not a great speaker, Menew thought of what he wanted to say.
“If…if you do like adventures, and want to continue them… I…would like for you to come with us.”
A wind blew between them.
Mofusen stroked his beard as if in thought.
“Sorry to keep you waiting!”
As the others had returned, they would have to continue the conversation later.
Mofusen laughed and patted Totto on the head. It was like looking at your great grandson for him.
Menew and Mr. Wal worked together to use a shortcut to return to the village. And then Mofusen approached Menew.
“Will you allow me to think about it?”
“Yes, I understand.”
They said briefly, and then Menew and the others went into the inn, while Mofusen returned home.
That night, Menew dined on the meat dishes that the inn served, while Mofusen drank tea in his house, and they talked about Menew’s suggestion.
Obviously, Totto and Ralph agreed with it, so it just depended on Mufusen’s feelings.
Even Ralph would not have abandoned everything and gone with them, had that incident not occurred.
If Totto had wanted to live peacefully, then he would not have left his mother and gone on this journey either.
That was how it was. Unless you were being forced into it, you had to consider things very carefully.
They had already told the innkeeper. They would stay here for a few days before leaving.
While Mofusen talked to his grandson about it, he was still not sure about leaving.
He had taught his grandson everything that he could. And the barrier would hold up.
His grandson was in his mid-thirties. If he continued to train, he would be able to read the presences, and treat people with barriers.
In other words, he couldn’t do it yet. If that was the case, should he not stay? As the chief, as someone who used the technique in order to live.
‘Mofusen, do you like adventures?’
Menew’s words replayed in his head.
He did like adventures. Even at his age, he wanted to learn more, see more, challenge more.
He was also curious about the relationship between the wood and gold dragon. When he was younger, he had never heard about dragons fighting.
Something was happening. And he was confident that he could be useful in the solution.
Should he stay due to a sense of duty to the village, or should he go in order to protect them.
Mofusen could not decide.
The embers crackled in the hearth.
