Ken yo, kaku katariki – 87

#30 – Absolute Sword

In this world, an individual could beat a group.
If that individual has overwhelming power, they could dominate the battlefield and change the tide of war.

But was that really a good thing…?

You needed power to protect the peace. No matter how idealist one might be, that was the reality. In that case, surely the greatest power should be controlled by the state.
And so it was that these weapons were born. The technology of magic engineering. Something that could defy the overwhelming power of an individual.

On land, tanks were among the most powerful weapons.

Their shells had anti-magic arts. And there was the firepower and mobility.
No one person could go against them.

However, there was one.
A single man who walked towards the tank, while holding his sheathed sword.

It was so reckless. So thoughtless.
As if to laugh at him, the great cannons targeted the man.

…Yukito exhaled.
It was in order to calm his heart.

This was not because the thing in front of him had been a symbol of power in his past life.
It was to control the anger that was welling deep inside of him.

Aize had fought. She had risked her life, and overcome her fear. As her instructor, he had felt so proud of her.
But…Mikhail Fravault.
He had made a mockery of it.
Her will. Her belief. The battle.

“You have contaminated it.”

And then it fired.
The air shook, and the mass of metal shot towards Yukito, faster than sound. Smashing his body to pieces. Or so it seemed.

The shell split into two as if to avoid hitting Yukito. They hit the ground behind him, causing clouds of dust to rise.
And Yukito was unhurt.
He had not moved at all. He just stood there.

…He had cut it. The shell. But no one had even seen him unsheathe the sword.

When they realized it, it was too late.
One hundred meters. They were already within striking distance for him.

“Cutting form…”

A flash was unleashed.

As if to cut through the air…
One swing and the tank was split in two.

The giant chunks of metal slid away from each other.

“…Funeral Strike.”

It was one of his secret attacks that he had created in order to cut down annoying monsters that were far away.
Of course, it left him open, so it was a skill that he could usually not afford to use in a battle where one moment could end his life.

However, the power was raised to the absolute limit, and could not be compared to something like Cutting Thread.
This was an attack that could cut down a castle gate.

As the fuel had leaked, the remains of the tank exploded into flames.
And then the remaining tank began to move, as if shaking out of a stupor.

It was moving with a madness now, while its cannon fired rapidly.
However, not a single one hit Yukito.

It looked like he was just walking.
However, he would sometimes blur or disappear.
Also, Yukito was controlling it so that not a single shell hit the audience seats.

If there was anything they could do now, it was to target Aize and the others.
Though, that too was impossible. After all, Mikhail Fravault was still there.
…And Yukito would not allow it.

Before they knew it.
He was right in front of the tank. Standing in their path.

“No way…”

The man in the cockpit groaned.

And then he suddenly remembered something.
In the battlefield…there was a legend of a master who destroyed an army with one sword.
Even after weapons had evolved, and countries relied on armed groups instead of individuals…he had still won.

“Sword Saint…”

And then there was a flash, a vertical line. And the tank was cut in two.
His quiet muttering was lost in the fiery explosion.

  1. Now that’s excellent build up. That scene could have flopped absurdly, but the author manage to pull it off. Thanks for the chapter
