Chapter 89 – A Return to Adventurer Life
After being able to relax for the first time since arriving in Nadar, they decided to pay a visit to the Adventurers Guild.
Mofusen had apparently registered there a long time ago, and so when they checked his data again, it was revealed that he was now A-Rank.
However, as he had been out of action for too long, it was decided that he should continue at D-Rank, along with Menew and the others.
Mofusen accepted his plate, and then looked up at the quest board. They were targeting something in C-Rank. As it was the equivalent of completing three D-Rank quests.
And if they completed seven, then they would get a promotion to C-Rank.
However, there were not many quests above C-Rank.
“Hmm?”
As Menew folded his arms and murmured, the guild worker at the reception desk called out to him.
“It’s because of the war. While there are more gathering or farming requests, there are not many for hunting. …I know, if you’re confident in your skills, why not try out the ‘named’ ones?”
“Named?”
Apparently, it was about requests for extremely powerful monsters, which the country put a bounty on. While they had ranks, you could accept these requests regardless of your own rank.
There was a good reward, and it was a good fit for their party, which was rather focused on combat.
“If you defeat ones that are A or B rank, then that will be taken into account. I will talk to the guild master myself. These are the current ones with bounties. And here’s a map you can borrow.”
“Thank you. But why are you…”
Menew was wondering why he was being so helpful. However, he stopped, before finishing the sentence.
“Everyone else is busy. Most of the best Adventurers have gone off to war, and have yet to return. It will likely be another month. But if you are traveling with this former A-Ranker, you must be good. And it would help us very much if you could do this.”
He said as he slammed a stack of about twenty sheets of paper on the table.
In that case… Menew accepted them and the map without hesitation.
At the table, they inspected the maps and search instructions. Generally, they were separated into different areas. Island, forest, and grasslands. They were probably the bosses of each area, and so they did not overlap.
“Alright, let’s start with the island then.”
Menew said casually. And then the guild worker offered to have a boat prepared. They really did take care of everything.
Regardless, they went out into the town again in order to prepare for the journey to the island.
The next morning, they gathered at the docks just as the sun was starting to rise. The guild worker and a fisherman greeted them.
As always, Menew carried almost all of their belongings. However, each also carried emergency food.
The fisherman then took them onto his boat, and they made for the remote island.
There were four islands off the Nadar coast, and if you traveled farther to the west, there was yet another one.
But they only had business at one of them. The closest island, which was Solshia. All islands were uninhabited.
It was decided that the fisherman would return for them in exactly one week.
As they discussed such matters, the small boat slid across the sea and arrived safely at the island.
It was like no forest that Menew had seen before. If anything, the place was more similar to a jungle.
There were three with large leaves and the ground was thick with tall grass. The flowers were fragrant, and there were fruits of various, bold colors.
As well as beasts and birds with unusual cries.
Menew inspected all of this as he stepped foot on land. His hands were in fists that trembled.
“…This really is like an adventure! I bet there will be a pyramid filled with treasure!”
“What’s a pyramid?”
Totto asked with a laugh. Menew suddenly froze.
“Uh… Umm… What is it again…? I think I read about it in a book. But I forgot…”
Totto was impressed that Menew read so much. The others pretended that they didn’t hear.
Menew felt like they knew more than they were letting on. But since they had not said anything, he felt safe for now. And he turned his attention back to the adventure at hand.
After the fisherman left, they looked at the information sheet for the island. There were four of the monsters here.
“Hot Legs Torum, Shield Shell Falis, Singing Princess Yaya, and Flying Damagarga. These names seem like they’re trying too hard… Well, maybe it’s just me.”
As Ralph was looking at it excitedly, Menew did not want to dampen his enthusiasm.
Mofusen stroked his beard as he explained.
“Giving them impressive names will keep away the weaker Adventurers. Anyone who would hesitate over a name is not up to the task.”
“You sure know a lot. Anyway, the closest one is… Torum? Apparently, it is a Garuda.”
Said Menew as he looked at the map.
“Mr-Mr. Menew. What kind of monster is that…?”
Totto asked fearfully. And so he thought back on knowledge he gained from books, as well as what he knew from his past life.
“A bird that can fight? It is humanoid and very aggressive. Also, I think they are strong against fire… Considering the name, maybe they have flames around their legs.”
He turned to Totto, who was now looking towards the jungle.
Totto was pointing with a shaking finger.
“There is a bird monster with a humanoid shape and fiery legs!”
Indeed, it was exactly that. It’s head was like a golden eagle’s, and its wings were shaped like arms, and it had two strong legs.
“Kueeee!!”
Cried the Garuda… And like that, it charged at them.
