Paintbrush Summoner – 51

Chapter 51 – Rethinking Their Gear

“I’ve been wearing these robes the whole time, but maybe I should change it soon…”

He washed it regularly, and it was not as if the cloth was worn out. After all, this was given to him by a god. In terms of numbers, it was probably quite good.

Menew thought as he inspected his robes.

(Black and lined with white. There are also intricate patterns…it is not bad in terms of design. Quite good, actually. However…)

They were plain.

He could not help but feel that way.

Totto wore white robes, and Ralph wore armor of wyvern leather. It had been given to him by Harness, and was quite rare.

However, if they were going to go into a dungeon, Totto must also have different equipment.

(Clothes, food, lodging…)

Lodging… They practically lived at the Hammer Inn. They had proper beds, and were even served breakfast.

They were able to eat lunch and dinner as well. Recently, Ralph started to learn how to cook outside. He already had a lot of knowledge, having been in the Knights Guild, which made him very knowledgeable.

As for Totto’s alchemy items, he kept fifty percent of the profits, while Menew and Ralph split forty percent, as a protection fee, for when Totto gathered materials. As for the remaining ten percent, it was used for food and to pay for their rooms at the inn.

By selling them directly to Harness or Reed, the medicine was able to be sent to places with demand, without collapsing the market with absurd prices. He was from the Merchants Guild, after all, and knew what he was doing.

Still, ten percent of the profits was a lot, and they also made money from quests and selling crystals. And so after removing a third from it, setting aside for Totto’s living expenses, they deposited the rest in a bank account that they opened with the Merchants Guild.

That left clothing. In general, he only needed shirts, trousers and under clothes, which he had. So it was just armor.

Ralph’s leather armor should be fine. If he wanted something heavier, fitting for a knight, he could buy it. However, he had not expressed such a wish yet. In fact, being light and quick was better suited to situations where you fought in small numbers.

The wyvern leather was black, but had glossiness that made it look purple sometimes, and it was quite beautiful. It also matched his sword.

However, Menew was worried about taking Totto to the dungeon as he was now.

“Alright! I’ll go and buy some gear!”

In the morning, Ralph had gone to buy supplies, and Totto had gone to the library. Menew was staying in his room at the inn. He still…did not feel like going out into the town.

But if they were going to the dungeon, then he had to prepare. And he wanted to find a weapon that would suit Totto.

And while he liked his robes…he might as well look at some other ones.

Like this, Menew suddenly became interested in fashion. And so in the afternoon, he took the other two with him as he headed towards an armor shop.

He had withdrawn money at the Merchants Guild, and had plenty of funds. Also, Reed had recommended a good shop to him.

It was a wooden building with black walls and a fancy show window.

“Ar-are-are-are you really going to go in there, Mr. Menew?”

While he had been awakened to the joys of shopping, Totto was still a miser by nature, who did not spend much money outside of meat and research supplies.

“I don’t think you really need to change your equipment.”

Said Ralph. From what he could see, Menew’s gear was impressive already. He doubted anything sold in this town could match it.

“It’s fine. It’s about looking nice.”

But equipment was for protection, not fashion.

“Welcome!”

A friendly-looking woman greeted them.

“I came to look at some new robes, for me and this child here.”

“Ah, so you are casters? We keep them over here. Adjustments can be made with the size, so just let us know.”

“Thank you.”

Ralph sat down on a sofa near the entrance and watched.

Menew and Totto were led over to a corner, and they slowly made their way through the various items, occasionally trying them on.

And then shortly after four o’clock…

“Ralph, look! What do you think?”

While Ralph was trying to stifle a yawn, Menew returned. And his sleepiness was blown away in an instant.

“Either you take that off, or I leave the party forever. It’s your choice.”

In other words, it was a strong ‘No.’

“What! I thought…it looked good.”

“Have you gotten ‘fashionable’ and ‘bizarre’ mixed up?”

In conclusion, what Menew was wearing was terrible.

Tights with red and pink stripes. Red boots with ruffles that had toes that curved towards the ceiling. His pants were a blindingly bright blue, and shaped like a pumpkin. And the edges had golden frills.

But worst of all was that he wore a plain white shirt on top of it, and then a rob with a collar that was three times the height of his head. It was lined with yellow, and the outside was green leather. His shoulders were also decorated. He looked like he was wearing curtains.

Bizarre indeed. If they went out into town like this, Ralph would pretend to be a stranger.

In his past life, Menew had drawn many fashionable characters, however, the feedback he was getting now was not positive.

Ralph had never looked so severe as he pushed Menew back into the changing room.

Even the employee was muttering, ‘Did we really have such clothes here…’ Apparently, Menew must have dug out something that was forgotten.

“Mr. Ralph. Don’t I look strong?”

“To… No. Take that off now.”

Totto’s selection was not much better.

He was wearing chainmail, and a leather jacket that was covered in mithril spikes. The shoulders were especially bad. He looked like a trap you would place at the bottom of a pit in order to kill people.

There was also a matching collar, a belt with skulls, and black leather pants.

“…I guess I am too weak to suit something like this.”

“If such clothes ever start suiting you, it will be when you get in trouble with the authorities.”

And so Toto was also forced to change.

Again, the employee muttered, ‘When did we get something so dangerous…’
Were those two looking for treasure?

“Fine. Then you choose, Ralph.”

“Yes. That is a good idea.”

Menew said as he came out of the changing room. And then Totto agreed.

(So that’s what it comes down to…)

He sighed. He would have to do it, for these two who had no common sense yet.

“…Wait here.”

And so Ralph had Menew wear his original robes, but added leather armor to protect his chest and arms.

For Totto, he chose white robes with patterns sewn into it with magic thread. And some light chainmail to go with it. He would not tire even after walking for a long time, and there was a pair of soft leather boots to go with it.

“Ohhh… I feel like a real magician who can fight…!”

“And I feel like a proper alchemist…!”

As Menew and Totto looked happily into the mirror, the employee explained to them their gear, this time, without confusion.

They listened carefully, and decided to continue wearing them after they paid.

Before leaving the store, Menew was still thinking about the clothes that he had chosen, but then Ralph stopped him. He was pointing to the people outside.

Everyone had their own characteristics.

They were all wearing different clothes, and yet, they did not stick out in their environment.

“Menew, Totto. Look around you. Observe. What are the casters wearing? What kind of clothing is most popular? Think about what it says about their homeland, their occupation. Why did they make those choices?”

He definitely had a point.

The two were very moved by this, and looked at Ralph’s back with great respect.

“Now that I think about it, this was the first time I chose my own clothes.

In his past life, he had just randomly bought things in bulk.

“Me too. I guess we both failed this time.”

“Next time, let’s try hard to choose something that even Ralph cannot complain about.”

“Yes!”

Totto and Menew bumped their fists together.

As for Ralph, a cold sweat dripped down his forehead.

(How could you choose something like that if it’s your first time…? Were those cursed items…?)

But it really was just a simple lack of ability to be aware of their surroundings. They were not used to it. Well, it was also partly because a certain god who declared he would ‘watch over’ Menew, had taken the liberty of adding items as a joke. But those two had still managed to pick up the items without suspecting anything.

Regardless, they now had their armor sorted out.

There were only two days left before going to the dungeon.

  1. At first I wondered why Menew didn’t simply draw robes of a different style. Then the author explained what passes for fashion to Menew.
