I learned why we didn’t get drunk
“Huh? You don’t drink, Takumi?”
He looked puzzled as he sat down next to me.
We were camping outside, and there were no chairs. But there was a cloth laid out on the ground, so he placed his plate and pitcher down on it.
The sun was down, and the air was ground cold. And so I wished that I could be closer to the warmth of the fire.
Still, as he wanted to talk in private, we had to sit away from the others.
“I do drink it sometimes. But it’s not really something I prefer. Though, the Range Village wine is quite good. We have been drinking that recently…”
“Yes, it’s not like you can’t drink it. You have the Gift, after all. Hmm. I see…”
He nodded with satisfaction and then stuffed more food into his mouth.
His cheeks were full like a squirrel. I almost wanted to poke them, only I did not want him to spit out chewed up food.
“What do you mean by that? I have the Gift?”
“Meh? Mah-mar-muh?!”
“…I think you should swallow that first.”
He quickly swallowed what was in his mouth, which was rather impressive. Though, I wondered if it wouldn’t result in indigestion later.
“Is it possible that you don’t know…Takumi? I don’t know how much I have drunk since coming here… But I bet you have never become drunk on wine?”
“Uh, yes. Not that I’ve drunk that much. But the Range Village wine did not work for me. At first I thought it was low in alcohol, but that wasn’t the case. It is quite odd.”
Back in Japan, I had often been forced to drink a lot of beer by my boss. I still remember getting drunk and having to rush to the bathroom.
Though, I had never drunk so much that I blacked out with no memory of the previous night.
“Yes, it’s because of the Gift.”
“It is…?”
Mr. Euto drank from his pitcher and sighed.
“Even if it’s a different color, the taste is still delicious. Mmm… And so is the food!”
“Um… Could you explain to me the relation between alcohol and the Gift?”
He was drinking the rose wine that had herbs in it, which changed the color a little. But it was still delicious, as was the food he was eating.
“Right, right, the Gift. Uh… You know about how overusing the Gift can result in losing consciousness…and in extreme cases, even death?”
“Uh… I knew about the fainting part. Because it happened to me.”
“Well, while it is a useful ability, you can’t use it too much. If you only knew how many times I fainted at first…”
“In my case, it wasn’t because I wanted to use it…”
I had no choice, because I needed to use it to save Sherry.
Thanks to that, we now had a great relationship with the fenrirs.
Also, he kept using it so that he fainted multiple times… It made me worry a little, but he had lived this long, so he must be fine.
“The power to use the Gift is not the same as the power to use magic.”
“I understand that…”
Once I got used to using the Gift…I started to be able to feel whether or not I could keep going.
“Yes. And that power…well, strictly speaking, it is not quite like that…but it is like the power absorbed from alcohol.”
“From alcohol?”
Was that like…alcohol was the Gift’s power and… No, he said it wasn’t exactly like that. Perhaps something was being converted and then…
