Chapter 176 – After the Battle with the Devil
Alya said with a serious expression,
“Mr. Theo.”
“Ah, Alya. Thank you. The lightning magic was impressive.”
“Not at all…”
Apparently, she had not expected to be thanked, and looked bashful.
“Your magic is amazing, Alya. Especially the activation speed.”
“Aye. I asked Hippolius to attack it with lightning, in order to tell you the enemy’s weakness and position. And Alya reacted without delay.”
“Yes, yes. The enemy had no time to run or brace itself. Well done, Alya.”
“…No-not at all…”
Gisela and I praised her, and Alya’s ears turned red from under her hood.
“Not only did you swiftly understand what Mr. Theo wanted to convey through Hippolius, but you acted quickly.”
“Aye, brilliant.”
“Kyuo-kyuo!”
Hippolius praised her as well.
“Without Alya’s magic, I doubt I would have been able to kill it with one hit. And so it might have run away.”
It had been possible because Alya had driven it out of the tree.
Had she been slower to attack, I would have likely needed to ask Hippolius to attack again.
Though, with Hippolius, Gisela and I here, I doubted the devil would have been able to escape.
Still, it would have taken longer.
“Alya, thank you so much.”
Alya looked embarrassed for a moment, and then she suddenly raised her voice.
“Um!”
“Huh? What is it?”
“There is something that I want to ask.”
“Ask anything you like.”
“How were you able to find the enemy’s location with the appraisal skill?”
“Ah, that. At first, I thought that it was underground. It seemed like the only explanation for Gisela not noticing it from up in the air.”
“And you used the skill on the ground?”
“Yes. And then I realized that there was a strange sugar beet. And then it kept changing.”
“What do you mean?”
Gisela was interested as well.
“The devil was just changing which sugar beet it was inside of.”
“Huh…”
“But we did not want to attack them and ruin the field. And so we waited for it to go in a tree, and then Hippolius attacked it.”
“Ah, I see!”
Gisela was satisfied with this explanation.
However, Alya was not.
“Um, I thought the appraisal skill doesn’t work on monsters…”
“Ah, that’s right. But it works on the devils. I suppose the gods do not see the devil as a living creature.”
“…I see.”
Alya finally nodded.
“Bemu-bemu!”
The land shark was thanking us enthusiastically.
I then told the others what it was saying.
“You are welcome.”
“It was nothing.”
Gisela and Alya said as they petted it.
“I’m glad that we were able to defeat it. Did you see any more of them?”
“Bemu-bemu!”
Apparently, it had not.
“That’s a relief!”
Gisela said happily, but I did not feel as optimistic about it.
“There was the one that attacked Shiro’s pack and Ije’s village. And the one that injured Boaboa. And now this one. There seem to be a lot.”
“Indeed… According to Ije, there should not have been many of them in this area. I wonder if there is a reason for it?”
I was curious as to why they were appearing more. But we did not know the reason.
So for now, there was nothing to do but fight them whenever they appeared.
As we talked about such things, the land shark started to inspect the field.
“Is it alright?”
“Bemu!”
While no one had been able to tend to it for some time, it said that it could be harvested without issue.
“Bemu-bemu!”
“Hmm? You are giving it to us? I am grateful, but…”
We had originally come here for them.
“Bemu!”
The land shark said we could take as much as we wanted, to show its gratitude.
“Well, if you insist… I’ll take one.”
“Bemu-bemu!”
“No, no. One is enough for now. After all, it is quite big.”
The land shark said I should take a lot without hesitating.
However, as I had used the appraisal skill in the ground, I knew.
You could only see the leaves on the surface, but the sugar beet underground was much larger than you would expect.
“Bemu!”
“You recommend this one?”
“Bemu!”
“Thank you. How do you harvest them? I doubt I could pull them out by just pulling at the leaves.”
“Bemu.”
The land shark then started to dig around the sugar beet.
“You dig with your hands?”
“…Bemu.”
“So the devil destroyed your tools. Alright, wait just one moment.”
“Bemu?”
I then took out some metal ingots from my magic bag, and crafted a shovel.
I made it small enough for the land shark to use comfortably.
“How about this?”
I said as I raised my head.
“That’s huge!”
“Wow.”
“Kyuo-kyuo!”
“Grau!”
However, Gisela had already dug the beet root out of the ground.
Thanks for the treat. 👍
