Chapter 239 – Summoned!?

“Arggghh!!”

Mette and Berdos ran parallel and charged into the horde of killer worms. And like that, the monsters were smashed and swept aside by the club and battle axe.

The killer worms were able to leap, and they would launch themselves into the air and attack. However, Asuha used wind magic against them, blowing them away.

And below ground, Ecleshia would control the roots of trees in order to stop them. While Monica attacked with her bow, and Melk and I used magic.

As for Iria… Well, I could not even see her anymore.

However, I could see killer worms and spirits falling in the distance. And so I knew that she was moving around us and fighting.

And like that, we made our advance.

Things were going well. We had defeated most of the killer worms already.

However, I also felt worried, due to the strong, growing presence from the south.

Not only was it growing stronger, but the magic energy was gathering to a single point.

Yomotsu must have realized it too, as he muttered.

“…This. Is he going to summon a great spirit?”
“Great spirit? Are spirits a type of undead?”

I asked, and Yomotsu shook his head.

“Strictly speaking, they are different. Kyuby’s method, known as Spirit Summoning, involves harnessing imperceptible remnants of life. While it uses magical energy, just like with necromancy, Kyuby’s technique allows him to mold them into any form he desires.”

So, these humanoid undead were shaped by Kyuby then.

“And this great spirit…”
“Mmm. He is creating a giant spirit. By using more remnants… You should not underestimate the spirits that he makes. When it comes to the summoning arts, he is more skilled than even the Demon King. If possible, we should stop him before he is able to summon it.”
“So we better hurry then.”

…Should we go by airship? No, the small one I had in magic workshop was not meant for combat. It was possible that it would be shot down.

Just then, there was a rumbling from behind as the earth shook.

“Baah! Move out of the way if you do not want to get hit!”
“Celes!”

Mette raised her voice as she turned around.

There was a formation of battle carriages made of purple iron that glowed. They were charging towards us while smashing the killer worms and spirits in their path.

The battle carriages passed us and continued straight to the south.

But then one of the carriages stopped near us. And Celes’s voice echoed from inside.

“Sir Joshua, we’ll lead the vanguard!”

A small window opened, and Ymir the dwarf poked her head out.

“Joshua! We shall make a path! Just follow us from behind!”
“Aye!”

I answered, and Ymir’s battle carriage continued to move forward again.

While the enemies were being blown away…the carriages started to drop small round objects in their wake. It was the bombs made by the dwarves. Shortly after, explosions erupted in various places.

And so the enemies that had escaped the charge were cleaned out by the bombs.

“Ooh! That decreased their numbers significantly! Let’s go after them now!”

Mette said, and we shouted in agreement. And so we ran down the clear path and chased after the carriages.

There were hardly any enemies left on the path where the battle carriages had passed.

And so before long, we were close to the place where I detected the magic energy.

Melk then raised her voice.

“Found it…”

Up ahead was Kyuby. He was holding his hands together, and his body was enveloped in magic.

“Baah! We’ll go all at once!”
“Wait, Ms. Celes! I will to do it!”

Iria said, and the Mopes stopped the carriage.

There were no spirits or killer worms here.

The only enemy was Kyuby.

However, he must have wanted to lure us in until the last possible moment.

He suddenly raised his hands into the air.

Monica unleashed her arrows.

However, they bounced off of an invisible wall.

“Tsk… Ms. Iria!?”

Monica noticed that Iria was already rushing towards Kyuby.

However, Iria’s blade was also blocked by something invisible, and so she stood back. Still, she was not harmed.

“Is that…”

The invisible thing gradually started to glow brightly.

“Iria! Come back! Craft… Wall!”

Once Iria had returned to us, I created a wall of stone.

A moment later, the sounds of burning flames erupted around us. The air turned red, and a terrible heat assaulted us.

“Celes! Sorry, but we’ll have to borrow the carriage!”
“Baah?”

I stored the battle carriage into magic workshop, and then turned it into planks of purple iron, which I then placed in front of the stone wall.

Immediately after, there was a massive explosion on the other side.
