Chapter 178 – Land Shark Home
We quietly watched the reunion between Bemubemu and his father.
After some time, I heard other voices around us as well.
Apparently, the other sharks had heard the commotion and gathered around.
Though, they seemed to be scared of the large Hippolius and Dragon, and could not come too close.
“Sorry, Dragon. But could you fly in the sky for now?”
“Graugh!”
As Dragon was smart, he immediately understood the reason.
And he slowly rose into the air.
“You too, Hippolius.”
‘Okay! Kyuo!’
And then Hippolius shrunk down.
“Kyuo.”
“I know.”
Hippolius wanted to be picked up.
“Bemu?”
“Bemubemu!”
“Beemu?”
Looking relieved, the land sharks started to gather around Bemubemu.
While they had been hiding, I suppose they did not want to go too far away from their precious fields.
“Oh, they keep coming.”
“They must have been so scared of the devil. This is a relief.”
“Good.”
Gisela and Alya looked like they were going to cry again.
They must have felt very sympathetic towards the land sharks who lived in fear.
As for Bemubemu, he was overjoyed to see the others.
They continued to gather until there were more than twenty of them.
“Bemu-bemu-bemu!”
“Bemu!”
“Bemu-bemu.”
They were all thanking us.
For defeating the devil, taking back the field, and helping Bemubemu.
I could tell that they were sincerely grateful.
I then interpreted for Gisela and the others.
“Think nothing of it. Besides, we got the sugar beets!”
“Yes.”
Gisela and Alya said bashfully.
After that, the land sharks invited us to their home.
As the devil had appeared there regularly, they had not been able to return.
We walked for some time, and then Bemubemu announced that we had arrived.
“Bemu!”
“So this is where you lived.”
It was quite close to the sugar beets fields.
A lot less than the distance between our base and fields.
“If it is this close, the devil would be able to watch both the fields and houses.”
“Bemuu.”
So it was no wonder they could not get close.
“Rooms?”
“Bemu!”
They lived in holes that had been dug out in the sides of a cliff.
There were about thirty holes in all, one for each shark.
I suppose there were more holes than sharks, because some had been killed by the devil.
It was a painful thought.
“Bemu.”
“I see. You changed locations every year.”
“Bemu.”
“They move based on the location of the fields. Hmm.”
“Bemu-bemu.”
“If there are no caves then you dig holes.”
This was the kind of information that Kelly would be very happy to hear.
“What about your farming tools?”
“Bemuu.”
“I see. You received them from Ije’s tribe.”
They must have traded the sugar beets for farming tools.
I knew how skilled Ije’s tribe was when it came to crafting things.
Upon returning, the land sharks were overjoyed to pick up their tools again.
It was like a treasure for them.
And then Bemubemu guided us to one of the holes.
“Bemu–bemu.”
“So this is your house?”
“Bemu!”
There was straw on the floor. That was likely the bed.
The hole was made to have an upwards slant from the entrance, so that water would not go inside.
“Still, it is a mild slant, and if it rained hard, surely it would get wet inside?”
“…Bemu-bemu-bemu.”
Apparently, it did happen. Such days were quite uncomfortable.
Also, it was cold in the winter time.
When that happened, they all worked together to dig one larger hole, and they huddled together for warmth.
However, since it was a lot of hard work, they usually lived in these smaller ones.
“Bemu.”
“I see. And sometimes the holes crumble.”
As I listened to all of this,
“Bamu-bamu.”
Bemubemu’s father brought a plate with some white stuff.
It was the sugar beet that had been cut into cubes.
Apparently, they had brought some while I was talking with Bemubemu.
It was their form of showing hospitality.
“Thank you.”
“Bemu.”
“Yes. It’s sweet and delicious.”
“Bemu!”
When I said that I liked it, Bemubemu and the others looked relieved, and they wagged their tails happily.
Normally, you did not eat them raw like this.
At least, not on the old continent.
However, apparently they could be eaten raw here.
“Delicious! Like a soft pear!”
“Yes, it is good.”
“Kyuo-kyuo.”
Gisela, Alya and Hippolius liked it as well.
Not only was it used to make sugar, but it could be eaten on its own. That made it quite valuable.
“Pii.”
I gave some to Pii as well, and he was quite happy.
Perhaps slimes also liked sweet things.
After that, I asked the sharks if I could call Dragon.
We explained that he was a friend, and so they were no longer very scared.
“Graugh.”
Dragon received some of the sugar beets as well, and he seemed to enjoy it.
