Chapter 198 – Demon Beasts and Spirits

Gisela petted Shiro and said,

“I see. So you are a fenrir. How amazing.”
“Wuff.”

‘Pet.’

“Wuff.”

‘Carry.’

“Kuro, Roro and Ruru. You are fenrirs too!”

Gisela sais as she petted all of the cubs who were on top of the table.

‘Carry.’

Hippolius came to me as well.

“You are good too, Hippolius.”
“Kyuo.”

Just then, Kuro and Shiro moved over to Victor.

And then they tried to climb up his arms.

“Kuro, what is it?”

‘Carry.’

“He wants you to pick him up.”
“I see.”

And so Victor picked up Kuro.

Kuro wagged his tail happily and licked Victor’s face.

And then Victor said,

“Um, Ms. Kelly.”

“Hmm? What is it?”

“In the legends that I’ve heard about fenrirs, it was said that they were messengers of god, or even kin to the god of calamity…”

“Yes, there are such stories… But we academics ignore such things.”

Said Kelly. And then she continued as if remembering something.

“Ah, but of course. While priests may be doing research on such things, monsterologists do not. Is that surprising?”

“Yes. It is.”

“Still, how are you supposed to learn about messengers of god? It is a matter of faith. The realm of theology.”

“Indeed.”

“Mr. Theo understands it. Our job is to learn about and categorize demon beasts and animals based on ability and form.”

Kelly said rather proudly.

In terms of theology, there was one thing that I wanted to ask her.

“Ah, that’s right. Kelly.”
“Hmm? What?”

“Right before you returned, Gisela said that she sensed a presence on the old continent that was very similar to Shiro.”

“Oh? Is that true?”
“It’s true!”

Gisela stopped petting Shiro.

“Please tell me the details.”

“Oh… It was on a mountain near the Demon King’s castle.”
“And? Was it a demon wolf?”
“The Demon King said that it was a spirit.”
“…A spirit…”

Kelly muttered. And then she became silent with a serious expression.

And so I turned to Alya.

“Alya. Do you know anything about spirits?”

Perhaps demons would have more knowledge than we did.

“Barely anything.”
“I see.”

“There are some of us who worship them…”
“Just like humans.”

“Yes. I think so.”

I then looked at Kelly.

“Are spirits also in the realm of theology?”

“…That is what they believe, but they are wrong.”
“What do you mean?”

“…As far as the other disciplines are concerned, it is only theology if it cannot be verified.”

“I see.”

I thought that I understood what she meant.

Unlike other things, spirits were known to actually exist. And others were able to do research on them as well.

“Are spirits included in monsterology?”

“No, as they have no physical body. Spiritology.”

“Do you know a lot about it, Kelly?”

“Not much. But it’s an adjacent field, so I know the bassics…”

She trailed off.

After a moment, she turned to Gisela, who was petting Shiro.

“Gisela. You say they felt similar?”
“Yes. Very similar.”

“How similar?”

“Hmm. That I thought they were the same species.”
“A spirit with no physical body was the same as Shiro?”

“Yes. Because they had the same air about them.”

“So the spirit was a wolf?”
“It had that air.”
“…I see.”

Kelly was quiet again.

“Wuff?”

Shiro looked a little worried.

“…This is just a theory, but… I would have to meet these spirits near the Demon King’s castle…”

Kelly muttered quietly.

“Perhaps those spirits ‘used to be fenrirs.’”

“Used to be?”
“Aye. Normally, it would be proper to think that there are no fenrirs on the old continent.”
“Indeed.”

If there were demon wolves who were that powerful there, then someone would have noticed.

They would have a large territory, and become the kind of all beasts and animals in the area.

And if someone with the taming skill entered it, they would be able to get information from the monsters.

In other words, it should be impossible for such a creature to remain hidden for hundreds of years.

“I thought they didn’t exist there because they went extinct… But perhaps they turned into spirits.”
“Can demon beasts really turn into spirits?”

“It is just one theory. There are legends and reports to suggest that it has happened.”

“There are reports, but it’s still just a theory?”

“Well, the reports could be wrong. A misunderstanding or a lie.”
“I see…”

“Well…at this point, we do not have enough information.”
Kelly said with a sigh.
