Chapter 165 – Learning the smell of sugar beets

“Fio. This is the sugar that Ije and the others made.”
“Brown!”

“That is the color of sugar.”
“I see!”

Kelly put some in a spoon and handed it to Fio.

Fio then put it in her mouth.

“Good! Good! Good!”

Fio looked like she was shocked.

She had been raised by demon wolves, so perhaps this was her first time eating sugar.

Of course, she would have eaten fruits that contained sugar.

But pure sugar was on a different level.

‘Kuro too! Kuro too!’

“Au-au.”

‘Eat.’

The demon wolves were eager to eat some as well.

“Wait a moment.”

I put some sugar into three small plates.

And then put the plates down in front of them.

“Kyafu-kyafu.”

They licked up in an instant.

“Did you like it?”

‘More! More!’

“Au.”

‘Yummy.’

“I see. That’s good.”

‘More!’

“No. It is bad to eat too much.”

I said while petting Kuro.

So they liked it after all.

And then I asked Pii, who was perched on my shoulder.

“Do you want some too?”

‘Will eat.’

Pii was interested in the sugar.

And so I scooped some up and offered it to the slime.

Pii then ate it.

“Pii-pii.”
“How is it?”

‘Good. But meat is better.’

“I see.”

‘Pii. But Theodore better than meat.’

“…Oh.”

Apparently, Pii did not hate sugar.

But he preferred meat.

“So that is how slimes are like. I will take note of that.”

Kelly said as she began writing in her book.

“Shiro. Hippolius. Do you know the smell of sugar beets now?”
“Wuff!”

“Woah, amazing. We’re counting on you.”

I patted Shiro on the head.

Apparently, she was confident.

‘Hippolius remember too!’

Hippolius wagged its tail proudly.

“I see. That’s impressive, Hippolius.”

I petted Hippolius as well.

And then Ije returned.

“Sugar. Collected all! Soy and Miso too!”

“Oh, that’s amazing. Everyone will be happy.”

The ingredients made with soy.

“Thank you.”
Ije said as she returned the magic bag.

“Yes. When we return to the base, I’ll transfer everything to the food storage bag.”
“Thank you. Very helpful.”

In the kitchen and dining hall, there was another magic bag installed. It had been brought by Victor, and was used to store food.

“Ije. Is there anything else that you want to collect?”

“Hmm. Gather pots for sugar beets too maybe.”
“Ah, that’s right. Yes, we could use those.”

They were big pots, and would be useful when soaking the sugar beets in water.

Later, I would like to appraise them carefully.

But when I tried to put the large pot into the magic bag, Fio tugged on my sleeve.

“Pots for the sugar beet?”
“That’s right.”
“Fio smell it too.”

So saying, Fio jumped up to the lid.

And then she dipped her torso inside.
I was afraid that she would fall in.

“Be careful.”
“Okay!”

Just in case, I held Fio’s foot.

“Fio. You don’t need to do it like that. We can put the put on its side.”
“Mmm?”

Fio pulled her head out and jumped down.

“Just wait a second.”

I gently tilted the pot until it rested on its side.

It was quite heavy. Even if Kelly and Ije worked together, it would be difficult.

“Now it is safer. You can smell it all you like.”
“Thank you!”

Fio then went down on all fours and stuck her head into the pot.

“It’s a clean pot, so don’t go inside.”
“Okay!”

As she was crawling, her hands were dirty.

“Well, I guess I could just ask Pii to clean it later.

‘Leave it to me. Pii-pii!’

“Good, Pii!”

Ije praised Pii, who shook happily.

Pii really did do a lot of work.

When it came to sanitation on the new continent, the slimes had a great impact on our daily lives.

“That’s right. Do you want to smell it again, just in case, Shiro and Hippolius?”
‘Yes!’

“Wuff.”
“Don’t go inside, alright?”

“Kyuo-kyo!”
“Wou.”

They assured me that they knew, and then they stuck their heads into the pot.

Fio, Hippolius, and Shiro were lined up neatly and wagging their tails.

‘Kuro too!’

“Wu!”

‘No.’

Apparently, Kuro wanted to go inside of the pot.

And so he waddled towards it with his short legs.

But Roro and Ruru stopped him.

“No. Kuro.”
“Kuunnn…”

While I wasn’t trying to scold him, Kuro rolled onto his back.

And so I rubbed him gently.

“Thank you for stopping him, Roro and Ruru.”
“Au.”
‘Pet me.’

“There, there.”

And so I petted Roro and Ruru as well.
