Chapter 183 – Bemubemu Was an Early Riser
The following morning.
I woke to the sounds of something small moving around.
“Hmm?”
“Bemu…”
The source of the sounds was Bemubemu.
He was holding the shovel I had made, and trying to open the door.
“Good morning, Bemubemu.”
“Bemu.”
“Do you want to go outside?”
“Beeemu.”
“I see. Just wait a moment.”
I got up and headed to the door.
At the same time as I got up, Pii jumped onto my shoulder as if he had been waiting.
“Good morning to you too.”
“Pii-pii.”
The slime must have been awake before I was.
Last night, we held a feast in front of Boaboa’s house as a kind of welcoming party for the land sharks.
I had then taken Ije, Fio, Bemubemu, Pii, Hippolius, Shiro and the wolf cubs back to the base.
This was so we could soak the sugar beets in the water.
Thanks to Ije’s careful instructions, the work finished in no time.
By the time we were finished, Bemubemu and the cubs were asleep. Fio and Ije also looked tired.
And so we slept at Hippoplius’s house.
“You’re an early riser, Bemubemu.”
I looked out the window and saw that the sun was still low in the eastern sky.
It had likely only been an hour since sunrise.
Normally, you would still be asleep.
“Bemu.”
Bemubemu took it as a compliment, and looked quite proud.
I looked around Hippolius’s house.
Fio and Ije were sleeping under a blanket with Shiro and the wolf cubs.
Hippolius was also sleeping in its small form. In spite of being one of the strongest creatures of the natural world, it was now sleeping on its back, with its stomach and neck exposed.
“Hippolius sleeps so boldly.”
“Bemu!”
Apparently, Bemubemu really looked up to Hippolius.
He was looking at Hippolius with sparkling eyes.
“Now, Bemubemu. This is how you open the door.”
“Bemu!”
“Yesterday, when we came to the house, Bemubemu was asleep.”
“Beemu.”
While the land sharks were intelligent, they had never lived with humans before.
And so it was no wonder that they did not know how to open doors.
“I suppose I will show you how to use the sink and bathroom as well.”
“Bemu.”
I showed Bemubemu the place, and he was able to use it just fine.
“Good. You are very smart.”
“Bemu!”
I praised him, and Bemubemu waved his arms happily.
After that, we went outside.
“Bemu.”
“Yes. There is a hallway outside. You can open it in the same way.”
Yesterday, I had made hallways to connect the various buildings in the base.
“Bemu?”
“Yes. That is the door. There are other hallways too, so you can enter any of them when you want to.”
“Bemu!”
Bemubemu opened the hallway door by himself and went outside.
“…It’s quite cool.”
“Bemu.”
Actually, it was practically cold.
It was hard to believe that it had been so warm just yesterday.
“Is the summer nearly over then?”
Perhaps autumn would come a lot earlier than I thought.
Ije and the climatologists had told me that winters were very cold on the new continent.
So perhaps they also had shorter summers.
There were some things that I had planned to do before autumn.
“Bemu?”
Bemubemu was opening and closing the door while looking at me.
“Yes, that’s how you do it. Good, Bemubemu.”
“Bemu!”
He waved his arms happily.
I suppose that was how he expressed excitement.
Just like how Shiro wagged her tail.
But then again, he had not done that when reuniting with the other land sharks yesterday.
So maybe it was a different emotion than happiness.
I would tell Kelly about it later.
“Bemu?”
“Do you want to go to your father?”
“Bemu!”
The other land sharks would be in Boaboa’s house.
It was close by, and not dangerous.
However, Bemubemu was young. So I decided to go with him.
“Alright. Then let’s go together.”
“Bemu!”
And then Bemubemu dashed off happily.
